Shocker Brew 4/19: Coach Of The Future

One big thing, trophy hunting, and much more!

Good morning! There’s a new head honcho in town, and his name’s Terry Nooner. We know we got a good one, but affirmations from college basketball HOF’er Roy Williams and NBA stalwart Nick Collison, it makes the decision feel that much sweeter.

What else are we tossing into today’s Brew?

🏀 One Big Thing
⛳️ Trophy Hunting
🌾 And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Big Win, Little Apple. The Shockers, coming off their first series win in New Orleans in program history, were looking for their first win in Manhattan (Kansas) since 2012, and well, things went as well as they could have gone.

The bats came alive last night as each of the Shockers runs were scored as a result of a home run. There were six in total including two a piece from Garrrett Pennington and Brock Rodden. Rodden hit one of his two homers so far, it sailed over the scoreboard in right field!

It wasn’t just the offense that was getting things done. Out on the mound, Jace Miner came in for relief, and threw a no-hitter in his 4.1 innings of action. To say he was fired up might me an understatement.

Ultimately, it was closer Nate Snead who closed out the night and got out of a sticky situation with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to send the Wildcats back to their dorms with the L. The Shockers improved to 21-15 on the season with their win, and will head back to Wichita to prepare for No. 7 East Carolina this weekend.

🔼 Orlando Bound. Women’s tennis is taking center court in the AAC Conference Championships as they begin their road to the championship. The Shockers received a first-round bye as the No. 5 seed and will wait to face off against Tulsa on Thursday.

WSU is 24-20 all-time against the Golden Hurricane and are looking to redeem themselves from a 4-3 loss earlier this season. Kristina Kudryavtseva comes into the tournament with confidence winning four of her last five matches, and freshman Theodora Chantava has the hot hand riding a four-match win streak.

Worried about missing the action? No need to worry! Keep up with all the AAC tennis buzz here as we root on our Shockers for the rest of the week.

🔼 Ran It Back. If you do it once, you can do it again, and the Shockers took that to heart in their gritty win against the No. 4 ranked Oklahoma State squad (again, did we mention that?)

It was Alex Aguilar’s game, and we were just living in it. The star performer pitched 8 innings and allowed just one run on eight hits. She had this to say after her more than stellar performance.

Tied after regulation at 1-1, the game headed into OT, and it took just one swing to shift the tide, and the momentum, over to the Shockers. Sami Hood sent her sole hit of the night over the fence and drove in two to get the lead and keep it for good.

The win is the second of the season against the Cowboys, and the Shockers have proven they are a contender against the best of the best. They will look to carry this win into their series later this week in AAC play against East Carolina.

🔼 Trophy Hunting. The Shockers headed to Brooksville, FL for the AAC Championship, and for the past two days, have been battling it out. Consistency is key in golf, and Mackenzie Wilson was WSU’s most consistent with rounds of 73 and 74, good enough for T-23. Not far behind was Kenni Henson who posted 73 and 75 and currently sits at T-26.

The Shockers battled back from a ninth place finish in round one and moved up two spots to secure seventh after a six shot improvement in round two. The final round begins tomorrow as the Shockers will look to keep improving their score and climb the leaderboard once again.

🔼 Best Effort. The Shockers wrapped up their regular season on the court at the UTSA National Campus against Temple yesterday as they tried to gain momentum heading into the conference championship.

Alex Richards took a singles match from the Owls as did Orel Ovil and Alejandro Jacome to split the singles category 3-3. It was a different story in the doubles matches however with Temple coming away with all three to barely edge out WSU 4-3.

The Shockers focus now shifts to April 21st with the chance at securing an AAC title for the first time since the 2015-2016 season.

🤔 SHOCKER TRIVIA

Championship Prep. As you now know, Wichita State women’s tennis is looking to snag its first AAC conference title this week in Orlando. It would be their first title since the 2016-2017 season.

🌾 ONE BIG THING

We mentioned it earlier, but the Shockers have added our women’s basketball coach of the future, and his name is Terry Nooner.

The first-time head coach had this to say about his excitement joining the university: “To say this is a dream come true is an understatement. As someone who played in Kansas, met my wife here and have raised children here, I couldn’t be happier.”

Nooner has been a D1 coach for over a decade now, and most recently with Kansas University. He lead them to back-to-back NCAA tournaments, including a WNIT title game appearance. The 10th women’s basketball coach in Shockers history is planned to be formally announced this Thursday at Charles Koch Arena.
