Shocker Brew 1/20: Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.
As we celebrate victories, moments and stories in each and every Brew, we pause to honor a man who moved our country and our society forward in so many ways.
Good morning, Shocker Nation!
Today, we pause to honor a man who moved our country and our society forward in so many ways. As we celebrate victories, moments and stories in each and every Brew, let us remember those who helped pave the paths before us.
We hope you enjoy this mini-Brew, or just a sip if you will. We’ll be back with your Venti-sized goodness tomorrow.
What else are we mixing into today’s edition of the Shocker Brew?

🔼 The Wright Way. Mackenzie Wright is part of the 2025 Pizza Hut Shocker Sports Hall of Fame induction class to be inducted on Saturday, Jan. 18.
Wichita State coach Kristi Bredbenner appreciated Wright's love for the game. She played third base and catcher from 2015-18 and Bredbenner counted on maximum effort every pitch.
"When the game started, you knew there was always going to be one person on the field who was going to inspire everybody to love the game," Bredbenner said. "She played hard. She got big hits. She had fun."
Wright earned AACPlayer of the Year honors in 2018 and helped the Shockers to their first appearance in the finals of an NCAA regional.

🔼 Shockers’ Parrish Reaches Apex at Triangular. Josh Parrish led Wichita State to its best KU-KSU-WSU Triangular team finish since 2020, claiming the High Point Award with 14 points. Parrish scored five points in the 60-meter hurdles, five in the long jump and four in the triple jump.
Kansas claimed its third-consecutive team title with 254 points, Wichita State placed second with 210 points and K-State took third with 188 points. The Shockers claimed six individual event wins, starting with a 60-meter hurdles sweep.
🔼 Down to the Buzzer. RJ Felton took four dribbles down the floor and knocked down a game winning three-pointer as time expired to lift East Carolina over Wichita State, 75-72, Saturday night in Charles Koch Arena. Wichita State (11-7, 1-4) clawed all the way back from a 12-point second half deficit to tie the game late and even in the final seconds only to come up short.

🔼 Making History. Wichita State's 2025 Pizza Hut Shocker Sports Hall of Fame class was inducted during halftime of the Wichita State men's basketball game against East Carolina on Jan. 18. This year's class includes Kellyn Johnson Taylor, Jim Schaus, Karma Wagner Mason and Mackenzie Wright. The addition of this year's class brings the total of former coaches and student-athletes in the Hall of Fame to 163, while there are 14 at-large selections.
🔼 Hardwood Heartache. Without starting senior point guard Taylor Jameson, Wichita State dropped its fourth-straight game, falling 80-58 Saturday afternoon in The Super Pit. Junior Princess Anderson led the Shockers with 13 points, hitting three of Wichita State's six threes. Senior Aicha Ndour tied her career high with 10 points and led the Shockers in rebounding with five.

🔼 Wise Words. In a scenario not unusual for a freshman, Tyler Carroll endured ups and downs in his first season as a Wichita State hurdler.
His solution was to spend his summer on the track at Central City (Neb.) High School, the place he turned into a four-time state medalist and set school records in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.
Carroll's summer work paid off when he won Wichita State's intrasquad meet in early December, lowering his time in the 60-meter hurdles to 7.91 from 8:21. That progress adds to a strong hurdles group that hurdles coach John Wise compares to the 2012 group that featured second-team All-Americans Todd McKown and Lawson Montgomery.

🔼 Stayed In Their Lane. Wichita State rattled off 10 consecutive wins en route to a sixth-place finish at the loaded Northeast Classic, hosted by Sacred Heart.
The Shockers (33-18) kicked off the competition with a 4-1 showing in Friday's Baker games. The only blemish on the day was a 1001-959 loss to host Sacred Heart, but Wichita State bounced back with three consecutive wins to end the day and then put together a flawless 5-0 Saturday in traditional matches. The Shockers toppled three ranked foes (#19 Merrimack, #21 UAB and #22 Delaware State) sandwiched around wins over Norfolk State and Long Island.
🔼 Regrouping. The Wichita State men's tennis team dropped their final match in the Sunshine State to the South Florida Bulls by a 5-2 decision on Friday morning at USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
The Shockers return home to host the Omaha Mavericks for their home opener at Genesis Health Clubs on Rock Road in Wichita on January 25 at 1PM.
🔼 Split Decision. The Wichita State women's tennis team split their season-opening doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Headington Family Tennis Center. Falling to No. 16 Oklahoma, 4-0, and bouncing back to sweep the Wyoming Cowgirls, 4-0.
The split has the Shockers sitting at 1-1 on the new season.
