Shocker Brew 10/10: Rocky Ground

Plus: A preseason conference honor for men's hoops.

Good morning, Shocker Nation. See you tonight!

What else are we mixing into today’s piping hot edition of the Shocker Brew? Find out below!

🏀 Rocky Ground
🏐 Match Day
🌾 And much, much more!

🌾 ONE BIG THING

🔼 Rocky Ground. Wichita State men’s hoops star Dre Kindell didn’t expect to be here, but he never let obstacles get in his way. Kindell learned how to play basketball on a rocky surface, but that’s just one of my challenges Kindell faced in his journey to play the sport he loves. Get to know Dre Kindell.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Already Standing Out. Senior Kenyon Giles landed on the American Preseason All-Conference First Team ahead of a new season of Wichita State men’s hoops tipping off. Giles, a transfer from UNC Greensboro, averaged more than 15 points per game while shooting 40 percent from three last season. He becomes the fourth Shocker to earn American Preseason All-Conference recognition.

🔼 Next Match. Wichita State volleyball is back on the court this weekend, first taking on Memphis tonight at 7 p.m. before hosting UAB on Sunday at noon. Both games will take place at Charles Koch Arena. Here’s everything you need to know before the first serve.

🔼 Connect with Coaches. Wichita State announced a new coaches podcast this week. Starting this season, coaches shows will move from radio broadcasts to on-demand podcasts, giving fans the ability to listen when they want, where they want. The podcasts will feature coaches from volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, and softball programs.

🔼 Best of the Month. Congratulations to Xin Tong Wang, who earned American Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Month honors this week! Wang became the first player from Wichita State to complete (and win a match!) in the singles main draw at the ITA All-American Championships. It marks Wang’s third in-season conference award and the first Player of the Month recognition of her career.

🔼 Top Finisher. Emilio Arellano Lamas finished in the top 10 for the third straight tournament this week as Wichita State men’s golf wrapped up the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational. As a team, the Shockers finished +1 on the tournament and placed third, while Lamas placed fifth as an individual. It marks the third straight tournament in which the team has finished in the top five.

🔼 Continued Success. Success just keeps coming for Wichita State women’s tennis. Under head coach Colin Foster, the Shockers have built a legacy of dominance in the Missouri Valley Conference and continued that momentum on the national stage. See how that winning culture - from conference titles to NCAA tournament runs - continues to shape today’s roster.
