Shocker Brew 10/23: So Awesome

Today, we recap a busy Shocker weekend

Good morning! Former Shocker and long-time baseball big leaguer Braden Looper stopped by baseball’s alumni weekend to give a message to the team on what it means to be successful. Head coach Brian Green said it best when recapping the talk, “So AWESOME!”

What all are we mixing into today’s Brew?

🔼 Laser Focus. Round one from the Diamante Intercollegiate is through, and the Shockers finished the day in 14th place with a lot of golf still left to play. Mackenzie Wilson carded the lowest score of the team with an even par round, and Kate Tilma wasn’t far behind with a 1-over par first round.

With many teams sitting within 10 strokes of each other, the leaderboard could look very different in rounds to come. The team is back up today for round two of the three-day tournament.

🔼 By George. Shocker men’s tennis wrapped up their showing at the ITA Central Region Championships following a singles quarterfinals round appearance. Alejandro Jacome battled his way to the quarterfinal round making it back-to-back years that a member of the Black and Gold have made it to the final eight players.

The team has one tournament left as the Shockers will head to sunny Florida for the Bonita Bay Classic to round out the fall schedule.

🔼 International Battle. After battling through the conditions, Shocker men’s golf finished the White Sands Bahamas NCAA Invitational with a ninth place finish. A duo of Shockers, Zach Sokolosky and Aston Castillo, completed their three-days under par while Blake Lorenz rounded out the top three with an even-par score for the tournament.

WSU men’s golf is done for the fall and will return to tournament action on Feb. 5 for the Los Vaqueros Intercollegiate in Cancun, Mexico.

🤔 SHOCKER TRIVIA

Leaps and Bounds. Last season, Shocker volleyball found success both in and out of conference play, but this season has been nothing but good times.

🌾 ONE BIG THING

For the seventh straight match, Shocker Nation can say their team came away with a win.

Shocker volleyball dominated the match against rival Tulsa, completing the sweep with a .302 hitting percentage and finishing with 18 more kills than the Golden Hurricane. Emerson Wilford and Natalie Foster each finished with double-digit kills, while Gabi Maas stole the show with 19 digs on the night.

The win marks the 19th consecutive match the Shockers have come away victorious against Tulsa at CKA, and the win helped head coach Chris Lamb move closer to that historic 500-win milestone. Next up, the Shockers will take on FAU on Friday night to try and extend the win streak to eight.
