Today, more conference honors and solid play from Shockers golf

Good morning! Full weekends for Wichita State, call that Shocktoberfest. The Shockers are loaded this weekend with a full slate of action. Check out what all is going down so you don’t miss out on any of the fun.

What all are we mixing into today’s Brew?

⛳️ The Big O
👟 Athlete of the Week
🌾 And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Short But Solid. Both the men’s and women’s golf teams competed in The Big O Classic in Omaha this week, but after weather kept them from finishing the tournament, scores following the first two rounds of play determined the final outcome.

⛳️ The women’s team finished in fifth place through 36-holes with Lauren Thiele and Anna Takahashi leading the way for the Shockers with scores of 10-over par each.

⛳️ The men’s team was able to fit in three rounds of play, and as a result, came away with a seventh place team finish. Zach Sokolosky leapt up the leaderboard 18 spots after carding a 3-under par round, leading to his top-5 finish.

🔼 Pro Shocks. A few former Shockers turned pro are making headlines entering into this week. Fred vanVleet was formally introduced as a Houston Rocket for the first time at the NBA’s Media Days while Alec Bohm started his postseason run with the Philadelphia Phillies in the MLB Wildcard Playoffs.

🔼 Super Six. The Shockers balled out at the ITA All-American Championships, picking up six total wins in Tulsa, OK. Alejandro Jacome and Vanja Hodzic each came away with two victories apiece and advanced to the round of 64. Marcelo Sepulveda and Misha Kvantaliani both won their opening round matches, but came up short in joining their teammates in the final 64.

The team still has two more events this fall, including the ITA Central Regional Championships coming up on October 18.

🔼 Top Ten. After a couple of solid performances from the Shocker women’s cross country, the team has moved up into the top-10 in the Midwest Regional Rankings, coming in at No. 10. Next weekend, the Shockers will get another opportunity to improve their ranking once again at the Bradley Pink Classic.

🔼 Shocker Madness. Only a few days remain until Wichita State kicks off the start of basketball season at this year’s Shocker Madness! Make it out to Charles Koch Arena this Saturday at 6:00pm for the free event featuring men’s and women’s basketball team scrimmages and a live performance by Kansas City native and hip-hop icon, Tech N9ne.

🤔 SHOCKER TRIVIA

Hall of Famers. Earlier this week, a trio of Shockers were welcomed in to the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. Each new member was well-deserving of the honor and will live forever in the history of Kansas sports.

Our question today — can you name the three Shockers inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame?

🌾 ONE BIG THING

For the second-straight week, Shocker women’s cross country runner Lucy Ndungu was named the American Athletic Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week.

Ndungu finished third for the second consecutive race in a row at the Gans Creek Classic this past weekend after finishing with a time of 20:41.0 in the 6K event. The time was a personal best, beating her previous best time by an astonishing two minutes and 23 seconds. The now two-time AAC Athlete of the Week has finished no worse than third in each event so far this season.

Lucy, as well as the rest of the team, will return to the course next at the Bradley Pink Classic on Friday, Oct. 13 for their final regular season race.
