Shocker Brew 11/6: Dreamy Debuts
Today, two Shocker basketball season-opening dubs and volleyball had a pair of AAC weekly honors
Good morning! Prior to Shocker men’s basketball’s debut, CBS Sports highlighted one of the most unselfish stories in all of college basketball, courtesy of WSU’s Harlond Beverly.
What else are we mixing into today’s edition of the Shocker Brew?
🏀 Two Shocker basketball season-opening dubs
🏐 A pair of AAC weekly honors
🌾 And much, much more!
🌾 ONE BIG THING
Shocker men’s basketball guard Justin Hill dropped a career-high 31 points in his Wichita State debut, powering the Shockers to a 91-84 road win at Western Kentucky in the season opener on Monday night. Playing the first true road game to open a season since 1992, Wichita State starts the season in the win column for the fifth straight season. Xavier Bell added 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting and a trio of three-pointers. Quincy Ballard and Harlond Beverly both chipped in 10 points apiece to round out the leading scorers.
📈 STOCK UP
🔼 First Won Down. Three Shockers finished in double figures as Wichita State women’s basketball took down Oklahoma Christian, 66-52, in its season opener on Monday in the Roundhouse. The Shockers have now won each of their last five home openers thanks to Jayla Murray and her first career double-double. The redshirt junior finished with 10 points, a career-high 13 rebounds and dished out a game-high four assists. In total, 13 Shockers entered the game, and 10 played at least 10 minutes, giving them the ability to maintain a fast pace of play.
🔼 Peak Performers. The Shocker volleyball duo, which consists of Morgan Stout and Katie Galligan, picked up a pair of AAC weekly honors. Stout earned her second-straight AAC Offensive Player of the Week award with her 5.44 points per set and .338 hitting percentage in the team’s two wins over Tulsa last weekend. Galligan received her first AAC Defensive Player of the Week honor thanks in part to her 27-dig outing against Tulsa on Sunday.
🔼 One For The Record Books. Road wins are quite often about having the best player on the court in your jersey. It helps when that best player is also the guard who runs the game and scores in tense moments. Wichita State enjoyed the benefits of great guard play in its 91-84 win at Western Kentucky with senior Justin Hill, in his first game as a Shocker. He scored 31 points, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out six assists.
