Shocker Brew 11/8: The Return

Today, Shocker basketball has officially returned

Good morning! Shocker Nation brought the heat from the stands for the men’s basketball’s season opener and was a real force for the team to feed off of. Luckily, there will be plenty more opportunities this season for the fans to come and show out for the Shockers.

🔼 Setting the Tone at Won and Oh. In what will be the first of many victories for first-year head coach Paul Mills, Wichita State men’s basketball started the season off strong with a convincing win against Lipscomb at The Roundhouse. With the win, the Shockers improve to 29-2 in season openers since 1992.

From the first tip of the game, the Shockers never fell behind, thanks in part to a fast start by the offense, setting up an opening lob and finish in the first seconds. After that, the team settled in with Colby Rogers scoring 18 of his 20 points in his debut in the Black and Gold. Three other Shockers finished the night in the double-digits with Quincy Ballard putting up 10 points, Xavier Bell scoring 12 and Isaac Abidde finishing with 13 points.

Next up, the Shockers are back at the Charles Koch Arena, and will face off against Western Kentucky on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

🔼 Season’s Beginnings. The Shocker women’s hoops team jumped out to an early lead after two quarters of play, but were unable to finish the job against No. 23 Oklahoma on the road. Tre’Zure Jobe jumped on the Sooners, putting up a quick five points to put Wichita State up early and finished the game with 16 points. DJ McCarty finished as the team’s scoring leader with 19 points and added three rebounds.

Luckily for them, Shocker women’s basketball will return to The Roundhouse for the home opener against Presbyterian on Nov. 8.

🔼 Superb Fall Finish. Wrapping up the fall season, Shocker women’s tennis ended with success at the Tulsa Invitational, going 5-4 in doubles matches and a stellar 13-6 in singles play. Kristina Kudryavtseva, Xin Tong Wang and Jessica Anzo all went undefeated as singles and were just a point away from going undefeated in their doubles matches.

🗣️ "The fall season is always about developing and I saw a lot of improvement in the team this fall. The challenge now as we head into our off-season is to take a couple days to recover, but then take advantage of the opportunity to continue getting stronger on and off the court." - Head coach Collin Foster
