Shocker Brew 2/16: A Race To The Very End
We're still riding high from Saturday night's huge win!

Good morning, Shocker Nation.
What else are we mixing into today’s piping hot edition of the Shocker Brew? Find out below!
🏀 A race to the very end
⛳ Tee off
🌾 And much, much more!
🌾 ONE BIG THING
Wichita State men’s hoops delivered old-school February basketball on Saturday, erasing a deficit they'd carried for 34 minutes to edge Tulsa 81-77 before a season-high 7,569 roaring fans at Koch Arena. Kenyon Giles carried the Shockers with 31 points while Karon Boyd, who was held scoreless against USF earlier in the week, bounced back with five clutch points in the final 90 seconds, including the game-sealing free throw with eight seconds left.
The win moved the Shockers into a fourth-place tie in the hyper-competitive American Conference standings, just one game behind second place, keeping their March Madness dreams alive in a race where seven teams still have realistic shots at top-four byes.
📈 STOCK UP
🔼 Opened The Season. Wichita State baseball swept a Sunday doubleheader from Northern Colorado with blowout wins of 11-0 and 7-3, improving to 4-0 for the first time since 2018. The Shockers exploded for 10 runs in the fifth inning of Game 1 (their first double-digit frame since March 2015), highlighted by Jayson Jones' three-run homer, Zeb Henry's two-run double, and Alex Ulloa's two-run triple, while Reese Kortum (1-0) and Matthew Cuccias combined for a shutout with nine strikeouts. In Game 2, Jones became the first Shocker since Alec Bohm in 2018 to homer in four consecutive games, and Kaleb Duncan delivered a clutch two-out, two-run double to break a 3-3 tie before the bullpen shut down the Bears with six strikeouts over the final 4.1 innings.

🔼 Tee Off. Wichita State men's golf kicks off spring play today at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas, riding high after a stellar fall that included four top-five team finishes in five events! Transfer Emilio Arellano Lamas shattered the program record with eight straight rounds under par, while the Shockers tallied eight individual top-20 finishes. The same fab five returns: Lamas, Jose Ramirez (2025 American Conference runner-up), Jose Carletta, two-time NAIA All-American Michael Robson, and sophomore Caden Cox, ready to take on the 13-team field at Laredo Country Club Feb. 16-17.

🔼 On Your Mark. Wichita State track and field spread the wealth across two states, claiming 21 podium finishes at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville and the Ichabod Invitational in Topeka! Josh Parrish tied his school record of 7.70 in the 60-meter hurdles at Tyson before heading to Topeka to win the same event with a 7.73. Keely Hoback swept both 60-meter hurdle races at the Ichabod Invite, Jelese Alexander blitzed the 60-meter dash field with a winning 7.59, and Chairo Ogbebor claimed long jump gold with a leap of 7.33 meters while finishing third in the 60-meter dash prelims at 6.91.

🔼 Undefeated No More. Wichita State men’s tennis pulled off the upset Saturday, taking down previously unbeaten Denver 5-2 at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center. The Shockers (5-7) seized the doubles point when Zaid Al Mashni and Pablo Roche Alcaya survived a tiebreak, then rode that momentum through five first-set singles victories.
🔼 Hold Serve. Wichita State women’s tennis extended its winning streak to the program’s longest since 2017 with a 4-0 win over Tulane yesterday afternoon!
