🔼 Sequoias and Baseball Go Together Like … You’ll See. The list of First Pitch Banquet speakers is noteworthy – former Royals star George Brett, former Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda (twice), former LSU coach Skip Bertman and Jim Hendry, former Creighton coach and Cubs general manager, among them.
None, however, used a picture of a bison covered in snow or detailed the root system of sequoias to illustrate his points. It's likely none insisted on flying commercial and delayed his wife's birthday celebration to speak to Shocker fans.
On Saturday, former Royals star, 1996 Wichita Wranglers prospect and future Shocker baseball dad Mike Sweeney talked baseball, raising children, nature, leadership and much more as the keynote speaker for Wichita State's annual baseball dinner. MJ Sweeney, his son, committed to play baseball for the Shockers in 2026 after spending this season at Grossmont (Calif.) College.
Read the full feature for more on immediately being drawn to the campus, his hopes for his son and resiliency on and off the field.

🔼 Squadding Up. Destiny Masters wasn’t the only Shockers Track & Field team member to make an impact this weekend. Between the Coach Wilson Invitational, the DeLoss Dodds Invitational and the Washburn Open, Wichita State recorded 14 top five marks in the American Athletic Conference.
Coach Kirk Hunter's distance squad competed at the Washburn Open, where Yared Kidane ran the fourth-fastest mile time in the conference and sixth-fastest in Wichita State history to finish third in 4:03.50. Eight Shockers claimed event wins at the Coach Wilson Invitational.

🔼 Standing on Business The Wichita State women's tennis team snapped a three-match long losing streak on Saturday afternoon with a resounding 6-1 victory over the Kansas State Wildcats. The win is the Shockers first over a Power Four opponent since March 10, 2023, when the Shockers downed then No. 49 Nebraska, 4-3 on the road.
🗣 "We're playing a tough schedule intended to challenge us and make us stronger. With our level of opponents this weekend, we definitely got stronger as a team." - Colin Foster, head coach

🔼 Have Clubs, Will Travel. The Wichita State men's golf team begins the 2025 spring campaign across the southern border in the Los Vaqueros Intercollegiate in Cancun, Mexico, with the tournament running through tomorrow (Tuesday, Feb. 4).
The Shockers competed at this tournament last season where they competed well, finishing in fourth in a tournament with many high scores. Michael Winslow tied for fifth place at two strokes over par.
The field contains 15 teams. The lineup for the Shockers remains largely unchanged from the one that put up a fantastic fall campaign, but Conner Geist will compete as an individual.

🔼 A Little Birdie Told Us. The Wichita State women's golf team begins the spring season on Monday, February 3 in the Texas State Invitational, with the tournament running through tomorrow (Tuesday, Feb. 4). The field contains 12 teams.
The lineup features one new face from the fall, as true freshman Kayla Van De Ven arrived to WSU in early January and will make the trip to compete in her first collegiate tournament. The Shockers will also be bringing an individual for this tournament in freshman Lara Stifter.

🔼 Elevating Black Voices. We’re proud to celebrate Black History Month and look forward to highlighting past Shockers who have paved the way for current and future generations throughout February.
