Shocker Brew 2/12: How Sweep It Is

Today, a men’s basketball recap and softball stays perfect during opening weekend

Good morning! Three of Shocker baseball’s top contributors landed inside the top 40 of D1Baseball’s 2024 AAC Top Prospects. Caden Favors (No. 12), Mauricio Millan (No. 23) and Hunter Holmes (No. 39) each earned spots on the list. On 2025’s list, Daniel Zang came in at No. 5 and four additional Shockers landed in the top-25 of the freshman list.

🌾 ONE BIG THING

🔼 Season Opening Success. Shocker softball got out to a hot start to kick off the season after going 2-0 at the Bearkat Classic. The season opener saw Wichita State face off against Stephen F. Austin where the Shockers needed just five hits to secure the 7-4 victory. Lainee Brown went 2-3 with a home run and three RBIs while Alex Aguilar picked up the win in the circle after coming in with 4.2 innings pitched.

In game two against Sam Houston State, the Shocker needed extra innings to earn the 7-3 win. Heading into the eighth tied at three, the Black and Gold put up a four-spot thanks to a pair of RBI hits and a sac-fly. Addison Barnard put together a typical two-home run performance for the 12th time in her career. Unfortunately due to weather, the remaining three games on the schedule were canceled.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼  Took Them The Distance. Shocker men’s basketball took last year’s Final Four participants to overtime, but were unable to close it out and fell 95-82 to Florida Atlantic. Oddly enough, Wichita State went to overtime for the second straight Super Bowl Sunday in a row. Xavier Bell finished with a career-high 25 points on 10-18 shooting from the floor while Colby Rogers eclipsed the 20-point mark with 21 of his own. Wichita State will look to return to the win column on its road trip against East Carolina on Thursday.

🔼  Rally Wins. Wichita State women’s tennis secured the come-from-behind win against Tulane in the last match of the day to take the dual 4-3. After Xin Tong Wang and Natsumi Kurahashi clinched the doubles point, it was Giorgia Roselli who secured the win on the last court to move the Shockers to 4-3 on the season.

🔼 Winning Ways. Shocker women’s basketball picked up its first true road win of the season after knocking off Florida Atlantic 67-56. Four Shockers finished in double figures, led by Daniela Abies’ seventh double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Jayla Murray put up a career-high 15 points while Salese Blow and Raissa Nsabua finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Wichita State forced 18 Owl turnovers that led to an important 21 points while only committing nine turnovers themselves.

🗣️ "When things get tough, we can't fracture; we've got to make sure we stick together as a group. And we did a great job of that today." - Terry Nooner

🔼  All The Wins. Over the weekend at the Ichabod Invitational, Shocker track and field claimed 10 event wins and put up nine all-time top-10 performances. Both the men’s and women’s 4×400m relay teams finished atop the podium while the women’s 3,000m runners swept positions one through four as Lucy Ndungu claimed first with a time of 9:22.81. Yuben Goncalves jumped a personal best 7.46m to win the long jump event, and Chidera Okoro joined the six-meter club to win the women’s long jump.
