Shocker Brew 2/2: Shocker State of Mind

Today, Shocker basketball recaps and tennis is headed to the schooner state

Good morning! Welcome to February, the month that marks the return to the diamond for both Shocker baseball and softball. The boys will make their first appearance of the season in Little Rock, AR on Feb. 16 while the women take the field for the first time on Feb. 9 in Huntsville, TX.

What are we mixing into todayโ€™s Brew?

๐Ÿ€ Shocker basketball recaps
๐ŸŽพ Tennis is headed to the schooner state
๐ŸŒพ โ€‹ And much, much more!

๐ŸŒพ ONE BIG THING

On day one at the Austra Skujyte Pentathlon at the K-State Multis, Destiny Masters set another Wichita State pentathlon record, scoring 4,211 points to finish in first place by 117 points. Masters recorded personal bests in the 60m hurdles, long jump and 800m to record the NCAAโ€™s fifth-highest score in the pentathlon this season.

Kenisa Meyer recorded a 346-point personal best in the pentathlon with 3,675 points, placing fifth. She opened the meet with another hurdles personal best, running 8.59 to finish third. She also recorded personal bests in the shot put, long jump and 800m. Tess Roman also finished with a personal best in the pentathlon, scoring 3,582 points to place sixth, and Abby Klipstein placed seventh with 3,295 points.

๐Ÿ“ˆ STOCK UP

๐Ÿ”ผ Tale of Two Halves. Going into the break, the Shockers held an 11-point lead, but the team was unable to close out the game and ended up falling on the road, 79-68, against Tulsa. Wichita State was 5-for-12 from long range in the first half but went just 1-of-9 in the second. Overall, Wichita State shot 46.2 percent, but the story was from the charity stripe as Tulsa attempted 21 more free throws than the Shockers, going 20-for-24 to Wichita State's 2-for-3. Five Shockers finished in double figures, led by Colby Rogers with 13. Harlond Beverly added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists.

๐Ÿ”ผ At The Buzzer. Shocker womenโ€™s basketball put up a fight through four quarters, but a three-point shot at the buzzer downed the Black and Gold for a 66-65 loss. The game saw 10 lead changes as neither team led by more than 10 points. Wichita State was busy on defense, forcing 19 turnovers that led to 18 points. Daniela Abies finished as the teamโ€™s leading scorer with 19 points and recorded her sixth double-double of the season after adding 14 rebounds.

๐Ÿ”ผ The Roundhouse Podcast. The crew is back with another episode of The Roundhouse Podcast, and on this episode, Wichita State baseball players Gavin Oswald and Derek Williams join the show. The pitcher and outfielder/first baseman talk about being reunited on the diamond after meeting each other at eight years old playing baseball in the St. Louis area. Plus, hear about why the two hate facing off against Jaden Gustafson, and how the two eventually ended up with the Shockers.

๐Ÿ”ผ  Schooner State of Mind. Both Shocker tennis programs will be serving up action this weekend. The menโ€™s team will head to Norman to take on Oklahoma while the women will travel to Tulsa to face off against Oral Roberts.

๐ŸŽพ The Shocker women head into the matchup with a 2-2 record on the young season while Oral Roberts comes in looking for their first win with an 0-3 record. The Shockers are 24-7 overall against ORU and have been an impressive 2-1 on the road this spring.

๐ŸŽพ The Shocker men are going into Norman with a 2-3 record to face off against a tough Oklahoma team that comes in at 5-1. Last week, the Shockers broke a three-match losing streak to earn the team's first home win of the season.
