Shocker Brew 2/26: A Star Is Born

Today, Masters, Navajon earn first-place finishes at AAC Indoor Championships and a new strikeout queen was crowned

Good morning! Stars were born this weekend for Shocker Athletics. Track and field’s Destiny Masters continued her dominant showing in the pentathlon with an MVP award, and Chloe Barber showed the softball world that she can hang with the best of them.

🌾 ONE BIG THING

Shocker track and field standout, Destiny Masters, scored a meet-high 21 points to claim the AAC Most Valuable Performer award at the AAC Indoor Championships. She earned 10 points in the high jump (1st ), eight in the pentathlon (2nd ), two in the long jump (7th ) and one in the 60-meter hurdles (8th ). On the men’s side, Adria Navajon was crowned the AAC Heptathlon champion for the third year in a row after racking up 5,568 points.

800m runner Farrah Miller finished her championship showing with a silver medal after setting a school record with a time of 2:04.68. Hudson Bailey also finished his weekend on the podium in the heptathlon with 5,048 points, earning a bronze medal. This wraps up the indoor season for most of the Shockers, but Destiny Masters is sitting in position to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships in both the pentathlon and high jump.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼  Queen of the K. After striking out 15 batters against No. 15 Arkansas, Chloe Barber followed it up with a 16-strikeout performance to set a new single-game school record against Illinois State to cap off the Razorback Invitational with a win. Wichita State finished the weekend 4-1 in Fayetteville, sweeping both games with the Redbirds and improving to 7-3 on the season. Wichita State concludes spring tournament play with a trip to Lincoln, NE for the Big Red Invitational from March 1-3.

🔼  Back On The Box. Wichita State women's golf teed off its spring season with a ninth-place finish in the Rio Verde Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Kate Tilma led the Shockers with a top-5 finish after finishing her three rounds at 2-under par. She did not record a single round over par, one of only three competitors to achieve the feat in the tournament. The Shockers will get a short time off before returning to tournament action on March 10 at the Tulane Classic in New Orleans, Louisiana.

🔼  Another In Overtime. Wichita State led by 10 at halftime but was outscored by 10 in the second half and fell to Temple, 72-66, in overtime. Xavier Bell scored 13 of his game-high 17 points in the second half, nearly singlehandedly keeping the Shockers in the game. The rest of the team was just 4-for-22 from the field after halftime. Kenny Pohto just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Quincy Ballard and Harlond Beverly both added 10 while Colby Rogers was held to seven points. Wichita State hits the road to Birmingham to face UAB on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

🔼  Battle With The Niners. Freshman guard Salese Blow led the Shockers with 17 points, her 16th game in double figures, but it wasn’t enough as Wichita State fell 74-48 on the road to Charlotte. Wichita State was able to force 20 turnovers but only finished with 11 points from the takeaways. Raissa Nsabua tied her career high with 10 points in the contest and Omella Niankan finished with nine points.

🔼 Strong Finish. Shocker baseball capped off its trip at the Jax College Baseball Classic with a decisive, come-from-behind win against No. 18 Iowa. The victory against the Hawkeyes improved the all-time series to 13-0. Five hitters finished the game with two hits with Seth Stroh and Jordan Rogers leading the way with three RBI each. Freshman Brady Hamilton locked down Iowa in the final 2.2 innings of the game, striking out three and allowing just one hit to secure the victory. The Shockers will take the field with a 3-3 record on Wednesday in Tulsa to face off against Oral Roberts.
