Shocker Brew 3/11: Cleaned Up

Plus: Tennis keeps rolling.

Good morning, Shocker Nation. The Shockers cleaned up at the American Conference awards table, landing three honorees headlined by unanimous First Team All-Conference and All-Newcomer Team selection Kenyon Giles.

  • The senior guard ranked second in the league in scoring at 19.4 points per game and shattered Wichita State's single-season three-point record with 105, a total that ranks in the top 15 nationally. His 602 points this season place him eighth in program single-season history.

  • Will Berg earned Sixth Man of the Year, just the second Shocker to win it, after averaging 8.7 points and 8.3 rebounds in conference play with a team-high eight double-doubles.

  • Karon Boyd rounded out the trio with Third Team All-Conference recognition, second on the team in scoring (10.9) and rebounding (5.8) while serving as the team's top perimeter defender.

The No. 2-seeded Shockers head to Birmingham with a triple bye to the American Conference Championship semifinal, tipping at 4 p.m. CT on Saturday on ESPN2.

🎾 Best of the week
📈 Moving up
🌾 And much, much more!

🌾 ONE BIG THING

For the second straight week, Wichita State men’s tennis’ Zaid Al Mashni was the last man standing, and he ended up at the bottom of a celebratory dogpile with a bloody scrape to show for it. The Shocker sophomore clinched Wichita State's 4-3 upset of No. 34 Oklahoma State at Coleman Tennis Complex with a gutsy 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 6-4 win at No. 2 singles, battling cramps, wind, and a raucous crowd duel between fans chanting dueling fight songs. It was the Shockers' first win over Oklahoma State since 1996, snapping a 15-match losing streak in the series. WSU (9-7) won the doubles point and got key singles victories from Ilias Worthington at No. 1 and Rodrigo Cruz at No. 6 before Al Mashni sealed it. A week earlier, he clinched the 5-2 win over No. 52 Nebraska. Coach Darragh Glavin summed it up: Al Mashni trusts himself against anybody, and that's exactly who you want in the clutch.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Best of the Week. Xin Tong Wang went a perfect 4-0 across singles and doubles last week to claim her second American Women's Tennis Player of the Week award of the season. The junior won at No. 1 in both singles and doubles during road victories over UTSA and No. 42 Rice, improving to 5-3 in singles and 7-1 in doubles this spring. Wang is ranked No. 124 in singles and No. 12 nationally in doubles alongside partner Giorgia Roselli.

🔼 Weather Delay. Wichita State softball’s contest against Oklahoma State last night was postponed in the bottom of the seventh due to weather, with the Shockers leading, 8-3. The game will resume on April 8 when the Cowgirls come to Wichita.

🔼 Moving Up. The 10-match winning streak is paying dividends; Wichita State women's tennis jumped eight spots to No. 28 in the latest ITA rankings after taking down UTSA and No. 42 Rice last week. The Shockers (12-3) are now the highest-ranked team in the American Conference, sitting ahead of Charlotte (No. 38) and Rice (No. 56). WSU has already racked up wins over five nationally ranked opponents this season: SMU, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, and Rice. The No. 28 mark is the second-highest of the season, trailing only a No. 24 ranking on Feb. 24. Up next: Arkansas State on March 13 in Indian Wells, Calif.

🔼 Ranked & Ready. The Shockers keep rising: after Sunday's thrilling 4-3 win over No. 34 Oklahoma State, Wichita State men's tennis climbed to No. 62 in the ITA rankings. It's also the first time the program has been ranked in consecutive weeks since March 2022. The victory over the Cowboys was the Shockers' highest-ranked win since 2021 and their first over Oklahoma State since 1996. WSU is one of four ranked American Conference teams, and the five-match winning streak has the Shockers rolling heading into a March 17 matchup at Coastal Carolina.
