Today, a preview of the Big Red Invitational and men’s basketball gets a big win

Good morning! TBT is heading back to Wichita this summer as all of the regional locations have been released. The AfterShocks will once again be competing for a shot at the $1 million prize, and hopefully this time, it will be in front of another record-breaking crowd.

What are we mixing into today’s Brew?

🌾 And much, much more!

🌾 ONE BIG THING

Shocker Nation, there goes that man! Wichita State’s Brady Palen earned the Men's Indoor Field Most Outstanding Performance award for his high jump clearance (on Leap Day nonetheless) at the AAC Indoor Championships. The junior cleared a season-best 2.18m/7'1.75" to win his first AAC high jump title and move up to No. 20 in the NCAA. The AAC’s best high jumper, along with the rest of Shocker track and field, will begin the track and field outdoor season at the end of the month as hosts of the Shocker Spring Invitational.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Roadtrip Winners. For the first time this season, Shocker men’s basketball picked up a road win against an AAC opponent as Wichita State took down UAB, 74-66. The Shockers were led by Colby Rogers who scored a career-high 29 points and went 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. After the Dragons pulled to within one point, Kenny Pohto and Ronnie DeGray III made shots to extend the lead back to six, and for good for the Shockers. Wichita State will host Rice on Saturday at 6 p.m. for the final home game of the season.

🔼  The Roundhouse Podcast. Baseball is back in full swing. On the latest episode, Wichita State outfielders Dayvin Johnson and Jaden Gustafson join the pod to talk about some of the Shockers’ performances so far this season, jersey numbers, walk-up songs and the new coaching staff.

🔼  Big Red Battle. Shocker softball is set to take the diamond once again this weekend at the Big Red Invitational hosted by the Cornhuskers in Lincoln, Nebraska. Wichita State is coming off a 4-1 weekend at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. with big wins over No. 15/14 Arkansas, Illinois State (twice) and UT Arlington. This weekend, the Shockers will face off against both Nebraska and Missouri twice. Pitcher Chloe Barber comes in after being named the D1 Softball National Freshman of the Week and American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week. CC Wong will also enter the tournament with accolades after being named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

🔼  At The Buzzer. Freshman guard Salese Blow provided the Shockers an opportunity to win the game in overtime after hitting a buzzer-beating three in the final seconds of regulation, but ultimately Wichita State fell to SMU in extra time, 88-84. Blow finished the game with a career-high 24 points at The Roundhouse, going a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Daniela Albies recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds while Jayla Murray and Raissa Nsabua both finished in double figures. After sending the game into OT, the Shockers couldn't get anything to go in the final two minutes of overtime, shooting 1-for-6. The Mustangs outlasted Wichita State, handing them their second overtime loss of the season.

🔼  Relief of Victory. Wichita State capped off the season-opening road trip with a solid 3-1 win over Oral Roberts to move to 4-3 overall ahead of the Shocker’s home opener. Freshman pitcher Tyler Dobbs allowed just one baserunner over five innings of scoreless relief to help hold the Golden Eagles to one run in the contest. The Shockers did most of their damage early with a pair of runs coming in the top of the second for a 2-0 lead. Darnell Parker Jr. laid down a perfectly executed bunt to bring home Jaden Gustafson for the opening tally, and Dayvin Johnson tacked on another with his two-out RBI single.

Now, for the first time this year, the Shockers will play on its home field at Eck Stadium as Wichita State baseball will host Utah Tech for a three-game series over the weekend.
