Shocker Brew 3/27: National Spotlight

Today, Wong earns National Player of the Week honors and Shockers went toe to toe in a mound showdown

Good morning! Shocker baseball will debut a new look this weekend with stickers on their helmets for two-out RBI and quality at-bat champions and to honor the life and legacy of Carl Hall.

What else are we mixing into today’s Brew?

🌾 And much, much more!

🌾 ONE BIG THING

Off the heels of her second AAC Player of the Week award, CC Wong added Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week honors to her resume. Wong is the first Shocker to be selected for the award since Sydney McKinney did so a season ago.

In the series vs. UTSA, Wong was 5-for-8 at the plate with four home runs, 11 RBI and five runs scored. The highlight of the weekend came in the finale on Saturday where she crushed three home runs and drove in six runs. She became just the third Shocker in program history to hit three home runs in a single game. Wong will look to lead Wichita State this weekend in an AAC battle against Charlotte.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Mound Showdown. It was a pitchers’ duel against Oklahoma State on Tuesday night, but the Shockers came out on the tough side of things, falling 3-0 at Eck Stadium. Tyler Dobbs shined on the mound for Wichita State after carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning and finished his performance with two earned runs and five strikeouts. Five Shockers put the barrel to the ball, but none could cross home plate. Wichita State will return to AAC play on Thursday night against Rice for the first of a three-game series.

🔼 Staying Steady. After splitting the weekend series 1-1, Shocker women’s tennis came in at No. 58 in the country in the latest ITA Rankings. So far this season, the Shockers are 2-2 against ranked opponents with a 10-5 record overall. This weekend, the team will have more chances to move up with a pair of conference battles on the road against UAB and No. 46 Memphis.

🔼 Staying Steady. Wichita State and Clapp Cross Country Course are set to host the 2024 American Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 2. The AAC championship meet will come to Wichita for the second time after the Shockers hosted the 2020 AAC Championships in February of 2021 at 4 Mile Creek Resort.

🗣️ "We love hosting, bringing the conference schools to Wichita, and giving them our hospitality, so having the opportunity to host the cross country championships is going to be really exciting. I know that the men and women on the team are extremely excited about having it here and being able to run on their home cross-country course." - Kirk Hunter, head coach
