Shocker Brew 4/3: Super Unc

Plus: Women's tennis is on a roll.

Good morning, Shocker Nation. On the latest episode of The Roundhouse Podcast, Wichita State AD Kevin Saal stops by to break down the men's basketball season, unpack what it means to retain Will Berg, TJ Williams, Dillon Battie, and Noah Hill, and talk about where the Shockers stand financially and why a reputation for keeping promises matters in today's landscape.

Plus: brainstorming marketing ideas for that top-row seat Coach Paul Mills keeps mentioning, and somehow a Lion King reference involving Battie and a cat enters the conversation.

What else are we mixing into today’s piping hot edition of the Shocker Brew? Find out below!

🌾 ONE BIG THING

Wichita State baseball opened a three-game home series against Tulane last night at Eck Stadium, and the Shockers' secret weapon may be a 24-year-old grad student in a Superman cape. Brady Pacha, dubbed "Super Unc" by his younger teammate, has been virtually unhittable out of the bullpen, entering last night’s game with a 1.59 ERA with a .139 opponent batting average, 28 strikeouts, four walks, and zero wild pitches or hit batters across 13 appearances. The 6-foot-3 right-hander keys on a top-of-the-zone fastball that sets up his curveball and slider, and he's racked up three saves in American Conference play alone.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Under Par. Wichita State men’s golf fired a sizzling final-round 276 (12-under), the lowest team score of any squad in Round 3, to surge into fifth place at the Cowboy Classic. The Shockers posted an 847 (17-under) total across three rounds against a loaded field headlined by champion No. 28 USC (838). Jose Carletta turned in a career-best tournament, capping it with a 4-under 68 in the finale to finish fifth individually. Jose Miguel Ramirez rallied late to tie for 20th, while Caden Cox (3-under) and Emilio Arellano Lamas (2-under) also contributed under-par final rounds. The Shockers knocked off five Scoreboard top-100 teams and finished just two strokes behind No. 49 UNLV, their highest team finish since placing fourth at the Border Olympics on Feb. 17.

🔼 Up Next. No. 63 Wichita State men's tennis hits the road tomorrow to face Drake (14-4) in Des Moines, with a noon first serve. Pablo Roche Alcaya leads the team in both singles (11 wins) and doubles (12 wins), and Wichita State will need to win the doubles point to get the job done; they're 31-9 when they do and 9-47 when they don't. Full preview here.

🔼 On A Roll. No. 26 Wichita State women's tennis (15-3) heads to Denton, Texas for a two-match road swing, facing Liberty on Saturday at noon CT before taking on North Texas on Sunday at 10 a.m. CT. The Shockers are riding a 13-match win streak, the longest since a 17-match run in 2016 and the fifth-longest in program history, with doubles playing a massive role; Wichita State is 13-1 when winning the doubles point and has taken that point in 14 consecutive matches. Top singles player Xin Tong Wang has been sharp, and the Wang/Giorgia Roselli doubles tandem has climbed as high as No. 9 nationally, setting a program record.

🔼 Mark Your Calendar. Wichita State women's tennis’ April 7 match against UT Arlington has been canceled, and a couple of time changes are in effect for the home stretch. The Creighton match moves to April 10 at 4 p.m. CT, while Tulsa shifts to a 1 p.m. CT start on April 11. WSU's remaining slate: at Liberty (April 4), at North Texas (April 5), then home for Creighton and Tulsa to close out the regular season.
