Shocker Brew: 4/7: On Pins and Needles 'Til Vegas

The Wichita State women’s bowling team swept their way to the Lansing Regional championship and a spot in the NCAA Final Four in Las Vegas.

Good morning, Shocker Nation! The Wichita State women’s bowling team swept their way to the Lansing Regional championship and a spot in the NCAA Final Four, knocking off Vanderbilt 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Royal Scot Bowling Center. Wichita State put up at least 999 pins in all six of their matches at the competition.

The Shockers (87-36) advance to take on top seed and defending NCAA champion Jacksonville State on Friday in Las Vegas. #2-seed Nebraska and #3-seed Youngstown State make up the remainder of the bracket. The start times for the matches at Suncoast Lanes have not been determined.

🔼 Rally Runs Just Short. The Wichita State baseball team carried a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning but allowed four runs and could not rally in a 5-4 defeat to Charlotte on Sunday afternoon at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium.

🔼 Mo Golf? No Problem. The Wichita State women's golf team opens play in their final regular season tournament of the year on April 7 in the 'Mo'Morial Invitational at Texas A&M's Traditions Club.

The Texas tournament will be the first for the Shockers since March 16, when they finished 13th in the Red Rocks Invitational, a tournament that was limited to just one round due to snowfall. Junior Kate Tilma was tied for the lead through much of the lone round but ultimately finished tied for sixth.

🔼 Who’s Got That Broom? 🧹 The Wichita State softball team picked up a series win at UAB after splitting Saturday's doubleheader, taking Game 1, 6-5, and falling in the finale, 4-1. Wichita State (19-18-1, 7-7-1) has won three of its five conference series, but remains in search of its first sweep this season.

🥎 : FULL RUNDOWN

🔼 Dubs For Days. Wichita State track and field claimed 13 event titles over three days at the Friends Spring Open and the Midwest Classic.

Five throwers came out on top over the course of the week, starting with a shot put win for Athan Huelskamp at Friends with a throw of 15.96m/52'4.25". Freshman Reese Goodlet followed that up with her first collegiate discus title, throwing 47.51m/155'10", and fellow freshman Kelli DeSpain took second with a throw of 44.80m/147'0".

🔼 Lamb’s Lexicon. The common thread with Wichita State's three volleyball transfers is a desire to take on a new challenge and learn volleyball in a new way.

With Chris Lamb, they found the coach who will definitely expand their understanding of the sport. Outside hitter Sydney Dunning, a junior transfer from Cal State Bakersfield, is using spring practices to learn the new vocabulary and playbook.

"Pay attention," she said. "Be a great listener. There's a new word every single day, new play every single day, new defense."

Dunning, junior setter Hannah Hawkins and junior middle Elinor Engel joined WSU for the spring semester.

🔼 Get Out Your Tissues. Each spring, Mrs. Abby Walls asks her eighth graders at Rincon Valley Middle School in Santa Rosa, Calif., to write a letter about their future. She mails it to them before high school graduation.

"I opened it up at my graduation party," said Wichita State bowler Ashtyn Woods. "I started crying. Then everybody walked into the party and my dad said, 'I have to read this to all of you.'

The letter revealed that eighth-grade Ashtyn knew what she wanted – major in education and bowl at Wichita State. Now a sophomore at WSU, Woods is majoring in early childhood unified education and bowling for the Shockers.

🔼 Stangs a Bit. The No. 49 Wichita State women's tennis team saw their six-match winning streak come to an end at the hands of the No. 63 SMU Mustangs on Sunday afternoon, losing 4-1.

The loss for the Shockers (12-7) is their first since exactly one month ago, when they lost 4-3 to Memphis on March 6 in Wichita. The six-match win streak was the longest for WSU since 2019.

🔼 Deuces. The Wichita State men's tennis team split their doubleheader on Sunday, falling to No. 59 Tulsa, 4-0, before beating Oral Roberts 4-0 later in the day. The split on the day made the Shockers 11-10 on the season.
