Shocker Brew 4/24: Ceremony of Champions

Today, Barber earns a weekly award and the latest from the Roundhouse Podcast

Good morning! There’s a new queen of the plate, and her name is CC Wong. After having Sydney McKinney wear the crown last season, Wong has taken over as her successor as she leads the NCAA with a .480 batting average and is the only player in the country with 10+ home runs and an average of .465 or more.

What else are we mixing into today’s Brew?

🌾 And much, much more!

🌾 ONE BIG THING

For the second time in her collegiate career, Chloe Barber was named the AAC Pitcher of the Week. Barber earned the honor following her complete game shutout where she allowed just three hits and struck out 15 batters — one shy of tying the single-game school record she set earlier this season. This year, the standout starter ranks top five nationally in strikeouts per 7.0 innings with three games of 15 or more Ks.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Pitchers Duel. Shocker baseball held a red-hot Oklahoma offense to just three hits, but only scored a run of their own as the top 25-ranked Sooners held off Wichita State 3-1 on Tuesday night. The Shockers used nine pitchers in the game to keep the batters honest, and Jordan Rogers drove in a run of the night on a solo shot to dead center. Wichita State will return home for a three-game conference series against Tulane.

🔼 Shocker Celebration. It was a night to remember as Wichita State held its 11th annual awards ceremony for student-athletes on Monday night. The ceremony recognized Shockers from all 15 varsity sports teams for their achievements in competition and the classroom. Here are a few of the winners from this week’s “The Wheaties”:

Newcomers of the Year: Mauricio Millan (baseball), Alex Aguilar (softball)

Breakthrough Athletes of the Year: Quincy Ballard (basketball), Morgan Stout (volleyball)

Athletes of the Year: Destiny Masters (track and field), Brady Palen (track and field)

Men’s and Women’s Team of the Year: Men’s track and field, Softball

🔼 The Roundhouse Podcast. On the latest episode, Wichita State men's golf coach Judd Easterling joins us to talk about the team's third-place finish in the AAC Championship, the program's best in seven years as a member.  Easterling describes Michael Winslow's final-round 66 and how the Shockers dealt with the challenging Pelican Golf Club.
