Shocker Brew 4/24: Sweeping the Weekend

Dynasty, off the tee, and much more!

Good morning! You might will definitely be pleased to hear that the Shockers absolutely dominated this weekend on the diamond. Wichita State is heating up at just the right time with a pair of series sweeps, and it’s not looking like they are slowing down anytime soon!

What else are we tossing into today’s Brew?

⚾️ Sweeping The Plank

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Sold Out Sweep. Following a shutout on Senior Day, the Shockers went into the series finale with brooms in hand to sweep things up in front of a sold out crowd, and man are those floors looking mighty clean!

The Shockers closed out Senior Weekend with a sweep of East Carolina with some solid pitching, solid offense, and outstanding defense. This diving catch, coming from who other than Sydney McKinney is deserving of a spot SportsCenter, and exemplified much of the way this Shockers team played all weekend. Oh, and she led off the day with a hit, good enough for seventh on the all-time NCAA hits list.

In the bottom of the sixth, with the game very much in hand, Sydney McKinney, star performer Addison Barnard, and senior Zoe Jones all had doubles to extend the lead to six and put any thought of a comeback the Pirates had to bed.

The 23rd-ranked Shockers are sure to move up in the rankings following this weekend’s events, and it’s just a matter of how high this team will climb. This next week, the team will close out the regular season, and if yesterday’s game is any indication, there’s no limit to how good this team can be.

🔼 Solid Dubs. The Shockers earned four event titles this weekend at the Midwest Classic, including an event sweep of the 800 meter race. Farrah Miller won her event and moved up to seventh all-time in WSU history with her time of 2:10.80. Iestyn Williams set a personal best with her time of 1:51.65 to complete to sweep.

Joining the duo in the winners’ circle was Adria Navajon after earning his first place finish after a 14.53 second 110 meter-hurdles event. The fourth Shocker to win today came from the high jump as Marissa Jensen claimed her fourth win of the season with a personal best of 5’10”.

The Shockers squad will parlay its wins into even more at the Drake Relays. An athlete can never have enough hardware, and the team will compete later this week to have a shot to earn some more wins.

🔼 Sweeping The Plank. After winning the Saturday double-header, including a complete game, 10 strikeout performance from Peyton Tolle, the Shockers were looking for to take the sole lead for first place in the AAC with a win.

(Narrator’s Voice: “They got the win.)

Grant Adler followed up that complete game with one of his own, allowing the Pirates just three hits through nine innings of play. Did we mention this happened against the seventh-ranked team in the country?

The Shockers picked apart the Pirates slowly but surely with 12 hits on the day. Peyton Tolle did his work behind the plate today with three RBI’s on two hits. David Herring and Garrett Pennington had a pair of RBI’s each, and by the end of the sixth inning, the game as all but over.

Shutouts don’t happen without a little help from the defense, and Sawyre Thornhill made the play of the day with a diving catch to keep the Pirates scoreless on the day. With sole possession of first in the AAC, the Shockers will look to improve their record against the Big 12 with a couple of midweek matchups.

🔼 Off The Tee. The Shockers closed out their final round of The American Championship yesterday in Belleair, Florida, and completed the tournament with an eighth place finish.

The team’s low scorer, Blake Lorenz, had a solid showing in rounds one and two, but struggled in day three ending his tournament at six-over par, good enough for a team best, T22. Team substitute, Michael Winslow, came in Saturday and filled in nicely carding a two-over par tournament in his two days of play.

WSU likely closed out their season this weekend, and fought hard all year with a first, second, and third place finish across three separate tournaments this year. A big congrats to a solid season this year, and here’s to an even better one next season!

🤔 SHOCKER TRIVIA

Birdies Everywhere. Blake Lorenz and Michael Winslow were the low men of this past weekend’s AAC Championship, shooting the Shockers’ low round of 70. No one should complain about an even-par round, but it fell short of the lowest score in school history.

The question today… Do you know what the lowest round a WSU men’s golfer has ever scored during a tournament?

🌾 ONE BIG THING

“To my new team… we’re going to be in for a good ride.”

New head women’s basketball coach, Terry Nooner, was officially introduced this past weekend as the 10th head coach of the program’s history. Nooner, who made his appearance alongside his wife and three kids ensured his new players that they would be in good hands. “I’m here. I’m your head coach and you guys are my team. You are my players now.”

The former KU player and associate head coach will instill his family values to help transform the program into the powerhouse that it can be. We’re counting down the days until we get to see him lead the Shockers this coming winter.
