Shocker Brew 4/5: Better With Friends

Today, day one with Friends and we're winding it back to the Shockers' walk-off win

Good morning! After entering the transfer portal, CC Wong was not sure where she wanted to end up. Check out this great piece from the Wichita Eagle on how head coach Kristi Bredbenner's culture and AD Kevin Saal’s commitment to mental health helped Wong find her home in Wichita.

What else are we mixing into today’s Brew?

👟 Day one with Friends
⚾️  Winding back to the Shockers’ walk-off win
🌾 And much, much more!

🌾 ONE BIG THING

Shocker softball will compete on its home turf this weekend as the team takes on Tulsa at Wilkins Stadium. Wichita State leads the all-time series at 37-28 but has pulled away after winning 10 of the last 12 meetings. The last time out, the Shockers closed out the series against Charlotte with a 7-5 win to avoid a sweep.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Doing It All. Shocker track and field standout, Destiny Masters, recorded the second-best heptathlon score in the nation, winning the Wichita State Combined Events heptathlon with 5,749 points. Her score moved her up to third all-time in Wichita State history, sitting just 63 points behind the top spot. Competing in his first decathlon, Luke Czamecki recorded 6,270 points to place third.

🔼 Headed South. This weekend, the boys are headed to South Florida to take on the USF Bulls for a three-game series. Last season, the Shockers took the series on its home turf that was capped off with a 12-1 run-rule victory. Friday’s matchup will mark the 20th time the two teams will have met with the all-time series knotted up at 9-9-1.

🔼 Closing Time. Shocker men’s tennis will host South Florida later today on its home court in the final conference matchup of the regular season. The matchup marks the third straight season Wichita State will face the Bulls, and the team will be seeking its first win against USF.

🔼 Wind It Back. It was a game so good, it needed to be talked about. Entering the bottom of the eighth, the Shockers were down three runs against Kansas. Seth Stroh and Camden Johnson breathed life with a pair of solo home runs to tie the game, and in the bottom of the ninth, catcher Mauricio Millan knocked a single to center field to walk it off for Wichita State. The win was the 19th of the season for the Shockers and the first walk-off win of the 2024 season.

🤔 SHOCKER TRIVIA

Spick and Span. Ever since the Shockers joined the AAC, the softball team has come in and picked up more than their fair share of wins.

Our question today: do you know how many times the team has been swept in an AAC series since joining the conference?

📆 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Zero times!

Since joining the American Athletic Conference, Shocker softball has never been swept. The last time they were swept in a series was against Southern Illinois in 2015.
