Today, Palen climbs the national ranks and women’s golf gets set to close out the regular season
Good morning! Senior Day is a special day for student-athletes, and this weekend, Shocker men’s tennis got the opportunity to celebrate the seniors who have given their time, talents and effort to the sport they love.
What else are we mixing into today’s Brew?
👟 Palen climbs the national ranks
⛳️ Women’s golf gets set to close out the regular season
🌾 And much, much more!
🌾 ONE BIG THING
Wichita State's high jump specialist, Brady Palen, cleared 2.20m/7'2.5" in the high jump at the Arkansas Spring Invitational to move up to No. 4 in the NCAA, No. 1 in the American Athletic Conference and No. 3 in Shocker history. The senior jumped an outdoor personal best that put him in position to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminaries, winning the meet with the first-attempt clearance.
Also in Fayetteville, Mattelyn Swartz and Marissa Jensen cleared 1.66m/5'5.25" to place third and fourth, respectively, in the high jump while the women's 4x100-meter relay team of Courtney Wilborn, Kate Campos, Sydney Brown and Chidera Okoro won the event with a time of 47.51.
📈 STOCK UP
🔼 Right At Home. After falling in game one to Tulsa, Shocker softball bounced back with a run-rule, game two victory, 11-3. CC Wong went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and Allison Cooper picked up the win in the circle after five innings of work. The Black and Gold battled in the final game of the series as Addison Barnard recorded another multi-home run game, but ultimately fell at Wilkins Stadium. The team now gets ready to host top-ranked Oklahoma on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
🔼 Closing Time. Shocker women’s golf will wrap up the regular season at the ORU Spring Invitational in the three-round tournament starting early this morning. The trip to Broken Arrow will mark the fourth straight season the Shockers have competed in this tournament. In their past trips, the Shockers have notched a pair of sixth-place finishes and a series-best fourth-place finish in 2021.
🔼 Running With The Bulls. The Shockers struck first in the series finale against South Florida but were unable to hold on to the lead, falling 3-2 on the road in extra innings. Starting pitcher Tommy LaPour shined on the mound and tossed 5.2 scoreless innings, striking out seven batters. Camden Johnson and Kam Durnin broke the deadlock in the fifth inning and batted in each of the Shockers’ two runs. Wichita State returns to action on Tuesday night on the road against Oklahoma State.
🔼 Double Trouble. The No. 63-ranked Shocker women’s tennis team will host a doubleheader today against Tulsa and Kansas City. Entering the matchup with 10 wins on the season, Wichita State goes up against the two teams at home for the first time in nearly a month. The Shocker doubles teams are 27-13 in dual matches and 46-60 in singles matches this season.
