When Chuck Barnes learned that former Wichita State basketball player Karl Papke was buried without a headstone in Wichita Park Cemetery, he couldn't let it stand. Papke, an All-State product of Wichita West High School who played for the Shockers from 1980-85, passed away in 1992 at just 30 years old. Barnes made phone calls, connected with former teammates and friends, and raised enough money for a headstone in about four hours.

The marker features a photo of Papke dunking against Bradley, WuShock, and his basketball honors, plus the words "Love Ya Bro," requested by his sister Karen. Papke played on Wichita State's 1981 and 1985 NCAA Tournament teams alongside Antoine Carr, Xavier McDaniel, and Cliff Levingston, and delivered one of the program's memorable moments to beat No. 11 Tulsa in 1984.

🔼 Historic Freshman. Wichita State softball’s Kinzey Woody capped a record-breaking debut season with NFCA All-Central Region Third Team honors, adding to a haul that already included American Conference Player and Freshman of the Year, making her the first player in conference history to win both awards in the same season. Woody hit .359 with 14 home runs and 50 RBI on the year, and was nearly unstoppable in conference play, leading the American in batting average (.476), slugging percentage (1.000), on-base percentage (.587), hits (39), and RBI (36). Wichita State has now placed at least one player on an All-Central Region team every season since 2018.
