Shocker Brew: 5/30: WSU's Wicked Smart Spring
Wichita State student-athletes recorded the second-highest spring semester cumulative GPA in school history, with a 3.419 for Spring of 2025.
Good morning, Shocker Nation. Shockers student-athletes recorded the second-highest spring semester cumulative GPA in school history, with a 3.419 for the Spring of 2025.
In August of 2022, Wichita State Athletics established bold and aggressive five-year strategic objectives. Beginning the Fall of 2022 semester and concluding the Spring of 2027 semester, Shockers Athletics aspired to achieve a department-wide 3.0 GPA all 10 semesters, a department-wide 3.30 GPA five out of the next 10 semesters—which has already been accomplished—and a department-wide 3.40 GPA once out of the next 10 semesters, a goal that has been accomplished four times. The Spring of 2025 accomplished all three of these objectives.

🔼 “Plees” Welcome Coach! Wichita State head baseball coach Brian Green announced Thursday the hiring of veteran coach Marty Lees as the program's recruiting coordinator and infield coach. Lees brings more than two decades of experience at the Division I level to Wichita.
Lees comes to Wichita State after two seasons as head coach at Stillwater High School. At the collegiate level, Lees most recently served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma State, returning to Stillwater for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. It marked his second time on staff with the Cowboys, where Lees previously worked as assistant coach from 2013-2015. In his second stretch with Oklahoma State, Lees added two more top-20 recruiting classes, including the #8-ranked class in 2021.

🔼 Writing Was On the Wall. While Farrah Miller's recruiting process unfolded quickly and largely by chance, Wichita State distance running coach Kirk Hunter saw her future clearly.
Soon after Kevin Saal took over as director of athletics at WSU in July 2022, he met Miller in the parking lot by Cessna Stadium. Hunter introduced her as a "future conference champion," before she ran a race for the Shockers. Miller, a transfer from Monroe (N.Y.) University, was new to WSU, as well.
Saal recounted that story at WSU's team dinner after the AAC Championships. Miller, a senior from White Plains, N.Y., did her part by winning the 800 meters in a time of 2 minutes, 04.37 seconds, a WSU record.

🔼 Staffing Up. Wichita State men's basketball head coach Paul Mills announced the hiring of Josh Eilert as a new assistant coach Tuesday afternoon. Eilert replaces the position that was previously held by Quincy Acy.
Eilert is no stranger to the state of Kansas and college coaching, with more than two decades of experience at the Power 4 level. He comes to WSU after a season at Utah where he was an assistant coach, and even closed the 2024-25 season as the interim head coach for the final six games. Eilert ventured out to Salt Lake City after spending the previous 17 seasons at West Virginia (2007-24) in various capacities, most recently serving as the interim head coach for the 2023-24 season. During his time in Morgantown, the Mountaineers earned 11 NCAA Tournament berths, including a Final Four appearance in 2010 and five NCAA Sweet 16s.
