🌾 ONE BIG THING

Kinzey Woody's breakout freshman season didn't start with fireworks. After striking out three times at Missouri on Feb. 27 and watching her average sink to .227, Woody sat three straight games and did some soul-searching.

What followed was one of the most dominant stretches in Wichita State softball history. Starting with a 3-for-3 day at UAB on March 13, Woody caught fire and never cooled off, racking up 12 homers, 36 RBI, and just five strikeouts in conference play to become the first American Conference softball player to win both Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in the same season.

Opponents tried walking teammate Ausha Moore to pitch to Woody instead. That backfired spectacularly; she delivered three grand slams and 13 multi-RBI games. Coach Kristi Bredbenner credits the turnaround to Woody learning she didn't need to win the game with every swing, letting her natural power and strike-zone discipline take over. Since that rough stretch in February, she's struck out just eight times in 33 games while posting a .489 on-base percentage.

Wichita State posted perfect single-year APR scores of 1,000 in 11 of its 14 programs for 2024-25, with volleyball and women's golf earning NCAA Top 10% Recognition for multi-year rates in the top tier nationally. All 14 Shocker programs registered a multi-year APR of 949 or above, well clear of the NCAA's 930 threshold, and nine finished above the national average for their sport. Women's bowling, women's golf, and volleyball all carry perfect 1,000 multi-year marks.
