Homecoming, One Big Thing, and much more!

Good morning! Prepare yourselves for a big week on the diamond. Baseball ends the season in Orlando starting Thursday, and softball heads to Stillwater for the first game of the NCAA Tournament on Friday against Nebraska.

What else are we tossing into today’s Brew?

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 We’re In. Wichita State softball is back in the bracket after earning an at-large bid to this year’s NCAA Championship. The Shockers’ program is the only program not from the ‘Power 5’ conferences to receive at-large bids in back to back seasons, displaying the quality of play this team has produced.

“We’ve done a good job of being consistent. It’s paid off,” said superstar Sydney McKinney at the team’s selection show watch party. “We’ve worked hard all year for one goal, and this is it,” first baseman Zoe Jones said. 🔼 Homecoming. Women’s basketball head coach Terry Nooner has landed his first official signee for the ‘23-’24 season in Tre’Zure Jobe. The Wichita native joins the Shockers from Emporia State and has one year left of eligibility.

The WBCA All-America award winner is a scorer, averaging 22.3 points with just over four rebounds and three steals per game during last season’s campaign. She was named to the All-MIAA First Team for three consecutive season at Emporia, and leaves the school as the third highest scorer in the ESU’s history.

“Jobe, one of the most highly coveted transfers in the country, is a coach’s dream,” said Coach Nooner after announcing Jobe’s arrival. “We made her a top recruiting priority and wanted to bring her back home as we build something new. [She] is a dynamic scorer and elite pick and roll player who can score in every area on the floor.” Shocker basketball found themselves a good one, and we can’t wait to see her out on the floor next season.

🔼 Softball Scholars. The Shockers continue to get the job done in the classroom as juniors Addison Barnard and Lauren Lucas earned Academic All-District honors by the College Sports Communicators (CSC).

Barnard earned her second straight spot on the list after completing the year with a 3.79 GPA as she pursues her degree in health science. Lucas, who earned her first ever selection, wrapped up the year with a near perfect 3.97 GPA as she continues towards graduating with a degree in sports management. The CSC recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined efforts on and off the field, and what two better choices than our Shocker softball duo.

🤔 SHOCKER TRIVIA

All Aboard. We’re still celebrating our AAC Champion Men’s Track and Field team from this past weekend, and for good reason. Back to back ‘ships are hard to come by, but the Shockers pulled off what many thought could not be done.

The question today—do you know how many total conference championships the men’s track and field team have won in Shocker history?

🌾 ONE BIG THING

Another week, another list of rewards for this WSU baseball team. After taking the series this past weekend against USF, a pair of Shockers were named as weekly award winners by the AAC.

  • Payton Tolle was selected as the AAC Pitcher of the Week after winning his ninth start of the season, a Shocker first since 2011, and going seven innings, striking out 10, and allowing just four hits. It was his first selection of the season as a pitcher, and fifth conference award overall.

  • Brock Rodden was named to the AAC’s Weekly Honor Roll for his performance against USF which included multi-hit games in all three contests, and a career high four hits in his game this past Saturday. All-in-all, the infielder accumulated nine hits with two home runs and seven runs driven in.

With just three games left in the regular season, expect to see these guys continue to do their thing, and bring the intensity to the diamond from here on out.
