Shocker Brew 5/8: Postseason Prep

Senior send-off, Shocker softball wrapped, and much more!

Good morning! WSU has crunched the numbers, and it turns out that the Shockers have some of the best fans in the nation. Don’t scroll too fast, but you’ll want to read more below on why that is, indeed, a factual statement.

What else are we tossing into today’s Brew?

🌾 And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Senior Send-Off. It was the regular season finale for Wichita State Track and Field, and on Friday, WSU got a chance to honor all the seniors that have been a part of the program.

Leading off for the seniors was Yuben Gonzales as he improved to No. 4 all-time in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 51.11 to win the event. Fellow senior, Toby Penner finished second in the same event with a time of 52.30. Over in the long jump, senior Nate Vann set his personal best at 7.10 meters to win the event and move up to seventh in the conference.

As for the non-seniors, Brady Palen and Destiny Masters won their respective high jump events. Masters added another mark in the record books as she joined the top-10 all-time list with a jump of 6.10 meters. Palen won his event with a jump of 2.15 meters.

With the regular season all wrapped up, the Shockers now prepare for postseason play. The team will head to Tampa, FL later this week to compete for a title in the AAC Outdoor Championships.

🔼 Lots More Left. A rain out yesterday prevented the Shockers from trying to grab a win in the series against Houston, but luckily, they will be back in action this Tuesday against Oral Roberts.

In game one on Friday, the Shockers were six outs away from securing a victory, but Houston scored four unanswered runs in the final two innings to steal the win. In game two, WSU tried to mount a comeback of their own, and scored three runs in the final two innings thanks in part to a two run blast by Garrett Pennington, but it wasn’t enough as they fell again in a 7-5 loss.

Only seven games remain in the regular season for the Shockers, and this week will mark the beginning of the last home stand of the season as well. Get your tickets now and head to Eck Stadium to see the boys battle for positioning in the AAC standings.

🔼 Shocker Softball Wrapped. It was an all around record breaking year for Shocker softball this season, and now, we have the stats to back that up. WSU fans showed up in droves to Wilkins Stadium this season to support the squad with:

  • 18,594 total fans in attendance for games this season

  • 5 sold out crowds

  • WSU ranked 26th nationally in total attendance

The job is no where near finished as the AAC and NCAA tournaments loom on the horizon, but without the fans, this team would not be the same. A big thank you to all who attended, and here’s to many more games this season to come!

🤔 SHOCKER TRIVIA

The Biggest Stage. The Shockers track and field season is coming to a close, but not before some postseason action that is still to come. The postseason is where the stars go to shine, but there’s no bigger stage than the Olympic Games.

The question today—do you know how many track and field Olympians Wichita State has produced?

🌾 ONE BIG THING

WSU’s The Roundhouse Podcast is back at it again, and this time, we get to hear from a player who has been lights out out all season, senior Lauren Mills.

Mills, who leads the Shockers in walks this season, takes us through her command of the strike zone, how she and her teammates have felt throughout this historic season, and the importance of preparation before game. The senior is hitting .376 this season with nine long shots and 42 RBI’s, and looks to be a big piece of a successful postseason puzzle.
