Shocker Brew 6/19: Hosting Championships
Plus: Hold serve.

Good morning, Shocker Nation. Wichita State will host the 2027 American Conference Softball Championship at Wilkins Stadium and three 2028 conference championships: cross country, men's tennis, and outdoor track and field.

The tennis and track championships will showcase brand-new facilities, as the six-acre Tennis Complex at Ignite K-96 is set to open in fall 2027 with 12 outdoor and six indoor courts, and the $38 million Phase 2 renovation of Crossland Stadium is underway. The softball championship will be the sixth time the program has hosted a conference tournament.

🔼 School’s In Session. Jordan Frison has always played the right way, and now he's bringing that mentality to Wichita State. The 6-foot senior guard transferred from Tennessee-Chattanooga, where, last season, he averaged 16.7 points and 4.1 assists, shot 42 percent from three and 82 percent from the foul line, and he spent as much time studying his teammates' tendencies as his own game. With ten returners back and summer workouts already underway, Frison is learning exactly where Will Berg likes to roll, how TJ Williams cuts to the rim, and what spots Dillon Battie wants the ball.

🔼 Hold Serve. Wichita State women's tennis earned its second consecutive ITA Kickoff Weekend berth, heading to Norman, Okla., as the No. 3 seed Jan. 22-24. The Shockers open against No. 2 seed Texas Tech, with the winner facing either host Oklahoma or Long Beach State. Wichita State is one of three American Conference programs in the event, joining Rice and Charlotte.

🔼 Welcome to Wichita. Ty Mercado joins Wichita State baseball after a season where he hit .421 with 12 homers and 36 stolen bases. Mercardo spent last year with Harford CC where the Fighting Owls advanced to the NJCAA World Series.

Wichita State also announced Omaha transfer Maddox Meyer will join the program. Meyer, a RHP, was an All-Summit League honoree last season and named to the Pitcher of the Year Watch List.

🔼 Welcome to Wichita. Wichita State track & field announced the signing of Dennis Rono, who transfers to the Shockers from Arizona State. The Kenyan native is a distance runner.
