Shocker Brew 6/5: Introducing Your New Voice of the Shockers
Plus: Landry Shamet is three wins from a championships.

Good morning, Shocker Nation. Wichita State alumnus Denning Gerig has been named the next Voice of the Shockers, taking over play-by-play duties for men's basketball and baseball beginning in 2026-27. Gerig succeeds Mike Kennedy, whose legendary 46-year career helped define generations of Shocker Athletics.

A Wichita native who grew up listening to Kennedy, Gerig has been broadcasting Wichita State events since 2015 and earned American Association Broadcaster of the Year honors in 2021 during his time in minor league baseball. He was selected from a national search that drew more than 100 candidates. A public reception celebrating the transition will be held Friday, June 12, from 5-7 p.m. at Social Tap in Braeburn Square.

🎾 Historic Ranking
🌾 And much, much more!
🌾 ONE BIG THING
📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Carrying Momentum Forward. Wichita State men's basketball is retooling its offense around ball movement and shooting after leaning heavily on Kenyon Giles' 19.1 points per game last season. Head coach Paul Mills prioritized retention first, bringing back a stacked frontcourt of Will Berg, TJ Williams, Dillon Battie, and Noah Hill, then targeted portal guards who can create for others. Jordan Frison arrives from Tennessee-Chattanooga with a top-100 national assist rate, 42-percent three-point shooting, and 16.7 points per game. Jahari Long adds another playmaker from George Mason at 12.2 points and 4.0 assists, while Bryce Heard (Dayton) and Cyr Malonga (New Mexico State) provide shooting and size. The roster was completed with point guard Desmeon Jones from Blinn College. Mills wants multiple playmakers on the floor to unlock a frontcourt he believes was playing its best basketball down the stretch.

🔼 Historic Ranking. Wichita State women's tennis was ranked No. 2 in the ITA Central Region, tying the program's highest regional ranking ever set in 2007. The Shockers also checked in at No. 3 in the ITA Mid-Major rankings. Theodora Chantava (No. 11), Xin Tong Wang (No. 13), and Giorgia Roselli (No. 15) gave Wichita State three regionally ranked singles players for the first time since 2018, while the doubles pairings of Wang/Roselli (No. 6) and Chantava/Kudryavtseva (No. 8) became the program's first ranked duos since 2020.
🔼 Acing Class. Wichita State track & field had a great spring in the classroom, with the women’s team posting a 3.51 GPA and the men’s team checking in at 3.31. It marks the second-highest women’s GPA and fourth-highest men’s GPA in program history. Congrats, Shockers!

🔼 Staff Complete. Wichita State women's basketball added Rachel Swartz to complete head coach Terry Nooner's 2026-27 coaching staff. Swartz arrives from Seattle University, where she spent three seasons as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. She brings head coaching experience from Davis & Elkins College and recently served as a WNBA player scout for the Washington Mystics at the Nike Hoop Summit. A former Missouri State player who faced Wichita State in the Missouri Valley Conference, Swartz was part of the Bears' 2015-16 MVC championship team.
