Good morning! With the last athletic event of the 2022-2023 season behind us, the offseason is officially here. Luckily for Shocker Nation, we can watch pro WSU alum, Alec Bohm, go out there and do what he does best: play some baseball.

🔼 Righting the ‘Ships. Our Shockers over in Austin, TX at the NCAA Outdoor Championships showed out this past weekend and returned to Wichita with a pair of All-American honors for their efforts in the high jump.

Brady Palen earned Honorable Mention All-America status after clearing a height of 2.11 meters on his second attempt. The jump secured him an 18th spot in the nation which gave him his All-American status.

Destiny Masters, in her NCAA Championships debut, was awarded a Second Team All-American honor for her third-attempt clearing jump of 1.81 meters. She finished 16th place in the nation in her event, and will return next season ready for more.

🔼 Finishing Strong. With the season concluded, the ITA unveiled Shocker women’s tennis as No. 9 in the Central Region. After going 12-10 on the year, WSU maintained a perfect 7-0 record at home and ended the regular season on a 5-1 run. They went into the AAC Tournament as a five seed, the highest seed by a Shocker team since 2019.

The ranking also marks the first time in four years that the Shockers have achieved a top 10 finish in the region. Additionally, WSU finished 25th in the ITA’s Mid Major Rankings as one of six teams from the AAC to appear in the end-of-year polls.

The Newcomer. In back-to-back years, the Shockers have had a member of the men’s tennis team win a Rookie of the Year award. As you will soon read, Alejandro Jacome picked up this year’s award, but do you know who won it in 2022?

🌾 ONE BIG THING

Speaking of ITA Central Region rankings, one particular member of the men’s tennis team picked up one of the top honors of the season. Alejandro Jacome earned the 2023 Central Region Rookie of the Year as it marks the second straight season a player from WSU has won the award.

Jacome picked up the award after finishing the season with a team-best 16-6 singles record. He picked up key wins throughout the season, including two deciding wins over Denver and Nebraska, as well as a No. 4 singles win over nationally-ranked SMU. The Ecuadorian native picked up the well-earned award and will look to keep up the pace once next season rolls around.
