Shocker Brew: 7/21: Few Answers, Fewer Excuses

The second-seeded AfterShocks opened TBT by methodically wearing down seventh-seeded No Excuses. Next up, they face the Coogs tomorrow night!

Good morning, Shocker Nation. The second-seeded AfterShocks opened The Basketball Tournament with a dub, methodically wearing down seventh-seeded No Excuses. A third-quarter burst put the game away at Koch Arena.

Rashard Kelly turned in his typical well-round game with 10 rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Conner Frankamp led the AfterShocks with four assists and added eight points and five rebounds in 19 minutes. He made 2 of 4 three-pointers.

The AfterShocks outscored No Excuses, a Houston-based team, 23-10 in the third by making 6 of 9 shots and 3 of 5 three-pointers.

🏀 Sunday Update! 🏀

The AfterShocks advanced to the final 16 of the 61-team tournament for a fourth time in six TBT appearances. They last advanced to the final eight in 2023. The AfterShocks improved to 14-5 in TBT.

The second-seeded AfterShocks play top-seeded Forever Coogs at 8 p.m. CT (TBT YouTube) tomorrow night (Tuesday) at Koch Arena in the Wichita Regional of The Basketball Tournament. Forever Coogs, a team of Houston alums, defeated Fire Family 82-69 on Sunday.

He Knows Hoops, From A-Z. Zach Bush is in his fifth year as coach of the AfterShocks, and he joined the podcast to talk TBT and more.

We start with his move to coach basketball at Maize High School, his coaching influences and how he deals with multi-sport athletes. We also talk about the addition of former Shocker Clevin Hannah to the coaching staff at Maize. Zach updates us on the AfterShocks roster and newcomers he feels will fit in well. What's the future for the AfterShocks? We discuss that as well.

🔼 AfterShocks Talent Runs Deep. The AfterShocks still love all parts of their summer reunion—the Shocker fans, playing in Koch Arena, signing autographs, renewing friendships.
 
They also want to win and take home their share of The Basketball Tournament's $1 million prize. After starting in 2019, and with a future that is uncertain, the AfterShocks want to give this TBT their best shot starting Friday at 8 p.m. vs. No Excuses in the Wichita Regional.
 
"I think this is probably our most talented group," guard Conner Frankamp said after Tuesday's practice. "If we can somehow come together and play together as a team, I think we have a great chance to make a good run."
