Shocker Brew 7/24: Jumping In July

Next Level Hooper, TBT Madness, and much more!

Good morning! We all know that Sydney McKinney knows a thing or two when it comes to hitting the softball, which makes sense why she’s embarking on her coaching journey as a hitting coach!

What all are we mixing into today’s Brew?

🏀 Next Level Hooper
🏆 TBT Madness
🌾 And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 The Final Piece. Coach Bredbenner completed filling out her coaching staff this weekend with the final addition to the team in assistant coach Easton Herring.

🗣️ “Easton’s energy and passion for coaching has been evident since he made the transition from baseball to softball. I look forward to seeing what he can do.” - Head coach Kristi Bredbenner

The defensive specialist will join the Shockers after spending a year with Austin Peay. They say defense wins championships, and with Herring joining the squad, this team is one step closer to that goal.

🔼 Next Level Hooper. After winning the first ring of his young pro career in this year’s NBA 2K24 Summer League, Craig Porter Jr. is off and running within the Cleveland Cavaliers organization.

📚 Read this recap of his summer thus far, and what the Cavs’ hopes for him are in the near future.

🔼 Winners Dual. Two of the Shockers’ best just so happen to face off against each other in the final round of the 113th Kansas Amateur Championship. Both Michael Winslow and Zach Sokolsky made it to the championship match where the newest addition to the men’s golf team, Sokolosky, bested his new teammate after winning 1 up in the 36-hole match to take home the trophy.

Luckily for us, these two will get to be on the same side fighting for the Shockers soon enough.

🔼 Save the Date! The inaugural Black and Yellow Gala will be later this summer on August 19th at the Charles Koch Arena. The event will go directly toward the support of all Shocker student-athletes and teams. Join us for this fantastic fundraising event by purchasing tickets down below.

🔼 New Listen Just Dropped. The memories just keep on coming. In this episode of The Roundhouse Podcast, hear from 2013 Final Four team members Nick Wiggins and Demetric Williams as they talk about how the coaches set the tone for the season, one particularly wacky win, and their affection for a close teammate.

🤔 SHOCKER TRIVIA

Generosity. This weekend, the 2012-13 Wichita State men’s basketball team was recognized with a 10-year reunion celebration of their Final Four run. With that celebration came the unveiling of the program’s newest training facility gifted by one of those members.

Our question today — do you know who gifted Shocker basketball’s newest facility?

🌾 ONE BIG THING

Man oh man, is it good to have basketball back in Koch Arena! Who would have thought the fans would have the place jumping in July? The AfterShocks have put on a tournament showing of the ages thus far in this year’s TBT, and if you haven’t been paying attention, it’s time to start.

The AfterShocks headed into yesterday’s game against Team Arkansas needing a win to advance out of the regional round of the tournament. So naturally, 5,032 fans filled up the Roundhouse to cheer on its home team, and like they did earlier this weekend, the squad pulled out a 63-59 victory to advance to the next round.

Incredibly, the game might not have even been the AfterShocks’ best of the tournament! The team had to battle back from a double-digit deficit to even reach yesterday’s game.
