Shocker Brew 8/14: Picking Back Up

New Champ, What A Time, and much more!

Good morning! It’s move-in season at Wichita State, and with that, we begin to welcome back all the newest (and oldest) Shockers back to campus. The first athletic event of the year is just three days away and should be a great way for all Shockers to get back into the swing of things.

What all are we mixing into today’s Brew?

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 New Champ. This past weekend, a pair of Shockers participated in the NBC World Series, a championship tournament in the summer’s most historic league. The series was hosted by none other than yours truly, Wichita, because baseball in Wichita just hits different.

⚾️ Josh Livingston had himself a hot tournament, including murmurs of NBC WS MVP status. He recorded a clutch double for his team, the Kraken.

⚾️ However, it was Jaden Gustafson, the Shockers’ sophomore outfielder, who came out as the big winner of the tournament after helping his team capture the NBC World Series title. He blasted a homer to dead center to expand the lead for his team and, ultimately, hoist the trophy.

⚾️ Of course, the tournament would not have been set without a Brian Green appearance. Shocker baseball’s new head coach got the feel for what Wichita baseball can be like ahead of his debut season with the team.

🔼 What A Time. Miss any or all the action of Shockers men’s basketball’s trip over to Greece? Don’t worry. The team put together a fantastic recap video making it feel like you were right alongside them the whole way.

This week is finally here! The inaugural Black and Yellow Gala is happening on August 19th at the Charles Koch Arena with the event directly supporting all Shocker student-athletes and teams. Join us for this fantastic fundraising event by purchasing tickets down below.

🌾 ONE BIG THING

At this point, you have probably heard of pickleball, the popular sport sweeping the nation, but one former Wichita State tennis standout is making a name for himself in the country’s fastest growing sport.

Jay Devilliers has been on the come up in the sport now since he joined the PPA (Pro Pickleball Association), but got his big breakthrough in 2021. Devilliers is now ranked fifth on the tour in singles, seventh in men’s doubles, and eighth in mixed doubles.

🗣️ “The sport is getting bigger and bigger. More challengers are coming in, so my goal is to just stay there and get better, hopefully.” - Jay Devilliers
