Shocker Brew: 9/22: Time to Git-R-Done

The Wichita State men's golf team opens play in its second tournament of the year, the Git-R-Done Invitational, today at Firethorn Golf Club.

Good morning, Shocker Nation. The Wichita State men's golf team opens play in its second tournament of the year, the Git-R-Done Invitational, today at Firethorn Golf Club.

Judd Easterling enters his seventh season as head coach in 2025-26. The Wichita State golf all-time great led his alma mater to a 74-60-2 record last season, setting a new career high for victories in a season. The Shockers recorded four top-five team finishes.

The Shockers finished 11th in the Ram Masters Invitational last week to open the season. Jose Miguel Ramirez finished tied for 14th to lead Wichita State individually.

A Dub + Triumphant Return = A Great Day. For the second-straight meet, Elkana Kipruto claimed the individual title and led his team to victory, while Lucy Ndungu made her return to racing with a runner-up finish Saturday at the Greeno/Dirksen Invitational.

Kipruto, a sophomore transfer and Kapsabet, Kenya native, ran 23:55.7 in the 8K, finishing 18 seconds ahead of Missouri's Elijah Limo to claim his second-straight victory.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Building On Mac’s Momentum. The Wichita State women’s golf team begins play in its third tournament of the season today in the Johnie Imes Invitational at the Club at Old Hawthorne.

Coach Tom McCurdy's crew has been on a tear this fall, earning two top-five team finishes, including finishing as runner-up two weeks ago at the Payne Stewart Memorial, the highest team finish for the Shockers since 2022.

Senior Mackenzie Wilson has recorded two top ten finishes in each of the first two tournaments for the Shockers. In total, four Shockers have had seven individual finishes in the top 20 of tournaments this season.

🔼 A Walk to Remember Forget. Amelie Paul is playing better golf, in part because she thinks less about golf when she is on the course.

Earlier this month, she asked Wichita State women's coach Tom McCurdy to walk with her during a tournament. She wanted to talk, but not about golf. She wants to think about golf when she heads to the tee box, but not in between holes. That improved concentration and patience are helping Paul as she starts her sophomore season with the Shockers. She finished in a tie for seventh in the Jayhawk Invitational with a seven-over-par 223. That score led WSU, although she competed as an individual. She finished 13^th in the Payne Stewart Invitational with a 222, a career low, second among the Shockers.

🔼 Conference Play Comin’ in Hot 🥵. On Friday, Wichita State (8-3) used big offensive performances from Sydney Dunning and Brooklyn Leggett to defeat South Dakota (7-4), 3-1, at the South Dakota Classic. The Shockers won by scores of 25-14, 22-25, 25-15 and 26-24.

Dunning led the Shockers with 19 kills and 12 digs, while Leggett had 17 kills and hit .410. Jordan Heatherly finished with 43 assists, while Gabi Maas had 23 digs.

Unfortunately, Wichita State (8-4) dropped its final match of the South Dakota Classic in five sets to Villanova (9-2) on Saturday.

The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Sept. 26, when they open American Conference play at UAB at 7 p.m. CT.
