Shocker Brew 9/23: Snatched The Crown
Today, three Shockers make a splash at ITA All-American Championships and volleyball takes the tournament title
Good morning! Shocker baseball was busy this weekend as the team hit the diamond for the first time this fall while some former Shockers showed their strength as the MLB’s regular season comes to a close.
What else are we mixing into today’s edition of the Shocker Brew?
🎾 Three Shockers make a splash at ITA All-American Championships
🏐 Volleyball takes the tournament title
🌾 And much, much more!
🌾 ONE BIG THING
Wichita State women's tennis sophomore Xin Tong Wang won three pre-qualifier matches over the weekend to move into the qualifying bracket of the ITA All-American Championships. She is only the second Shocker to advance through the pre-qualifying draw, joining Lutfiana Budiharto's 2009 run. Wang defeated three power four opponents to make it into the qualifying draw and is one of only two players in the American Athletic Conference to reach the qualifying draw.
📈 STOCK UP
🔼 Took The Crown. Wichita State finished the Shocker Volleyball Classic 2-1 and champions of the invitational following a five-set victory over Omaha on Saturday. The Shockers let a huge fifth-set lead slip away but got three straight Morgan Stout kills to survive. Wichita State hit just .182 as a team compared to .277 for Omaha, but out-dug the Mavericks 58-56, out-blocked them 9.0-8.0, and committed six fewer service errors to go along with one more service ace. Up next, the Shockers open AAC play on Wednesday at Memphis.
🔼 Hot At The Right Time. Shocker men’s tennis doubles team Alejandro Jacome and Kristof Minarik pulled off two impressive victories at the ITA All-American Championships to advance to the doubles qualifiers. The duo first took down a team from Texas A&M, making a 6-7, 6-2, 12-10 comeback. Then in the second round, the Shocker duo took down a pair from Ohio State in straight sets to keep the dream alive. Jacome and Minarik will continue their quest for wins today at 3 p.m. in a match against a duo from Florida State.
🔼 Tee Time. The Shocker women's golf team opens play in their second tournament of the season today at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic. Head coach Tom McCurdy is preparing his squad for the difference in altitude that the team will experience at the elevation of the golf course, as Eagle, Colorado is over 7,000 feet above sea level. The Shockers will stick with the same five in Colorado as he did two weeks ago in Manhattan, Kansas, at the Powercat Invitational, where the Shockers tied for eighth of 16 teams.
