Shocker Brew 9/30: What Does the Fox Say?

Today, we take a look at the feature on Maurice Foxworth as he pays tribute to Coach Willie Jeffries

Good morning! He looked too small to play NCAA Division I football, so coaches advised him to wear a loose-fitting sweater to pump up his appearance. By his own admission, Maurice Foxworth didn't dedicate himself to his studies while at Wichita State University.

None of that ultimately impeded Foxworth, now an intellectual property lawyer and consultant who lives in Woodbridge, Va. He had help, which is one reason he will return to Wichita this weekend for Wichita State's All-Years Football Reunion.

"I want to honor Coach (Willie) Jeffries for making those types of opportunities possible," he said.

Read the feature on Foxworth, including more on what Coach Jeffries taught him, the generous loan Coach gave him when his tuition money ran out, and Foxworth’s ultimate academic redemption.

🔼 Left For the Lone Star State. The Wichita State men's golf team opens play in their third tournament of the year TODAY in the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at Westwood Golf Club.

The Shockers are looking to improve from a disappointing ninth-place finish at the Git-R-Done Invitational last week in Lincoln, Nebraska.

This will be the first Texas trip for the Black and Yellow since October 2, 2022, when the Shockers finished 17th in the Trinity Forest Invitational at Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas, Texas.

🔼 Temple of Doom. Wichita State survived a thrilling, back-and-forth fourth set to clip Temple 25-20, 20-25, 25-16, 27-25 on Friday night at Charles Koch Arena.

Alyssa Gonzales fired a season-high 17 kills and hit .355, helping the Shockers hit .302 as a team on the night. They'd need every one of those kills to emerge victorious in the fourth set, which featured 14 ties, six lead changes, and set point opportunities for both teams.

In addition to the offensive output from Gonzales, Wichita State got 13 kills from Emerson Wilford, 12 from Brooklyn Leggett, 11 from Morgan Stout and eight from Maddie Wilson, all distributed by 48 assists from Izzi Strand.

🔼 Onward and Upward. Wichita State's Sarah Bertry and Yared Kidane recorded top-75 finishes in a field of over 300 at the Gans Creek Classic Friday morning in Columbia, Mo.

The Shocker men steadily moved up as a team throughout the race to place 19th of 37 teams, and the women placed 20th out of 38 teams.

"Races like this with top-level competition from around the United States are usually a slap in the face because they're so tough," head coach Kirk Hunter said. "But they're good for us, especially this time of year, because we have time to learn from what we did today and use it to get better.”
