Good morning, Shocker Nation. Wichita State cross country opened the season with a bang! The Shockers swept the team and individual titles on both sides Saturday at the 78th annual JK Gold Classic at Clapp Cross Country Course. The men claimed their fifth straight team title, finishing 1-2-3-4-6 for just 16 points, while the women took the JK Gold Classic crown with 24.

Nicholas Kipchirchir and Vivien Kipkorir each won in their Shocker debuts, Kipchirchir covering the 6K in 18:01.10 and Kipkorir taking the 5K in 17:33.72. Wichita State returns to action Friday, Sept. 25 at the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, Mo.

🌾 ONE BIG THING

Wichita State cross country’s Nicholas Kipchirchir got his marching orders before Saturday's JK Gold Classic: run with the pack, then run for the line. The Virginia Tech transfer stayed in the group for more than three kilometers before breaking away with 2025 All-American Elkana Kipruto and winning his Shocker debut in 18:01.10. The two are friends from their high school days in Kenya and now train together, a pairing coach Kirk Hunter expects to produce spectacular workouts. Wichita State swept both team titles, and Hunter liked that his top runners held back to pull teammates along; it’s the kind of thing that pays off in October and November.

The Shockers took set two behind a .294 team clip and 15 kills, riding a late 5-0 run to flip a 19-21 deficit into a 24-21 lead before Grace Hett closed it out. McKenzie Jones added 11 kills and Allie Paulsen hit .444 with five. Wichita State continues its six-match road stretch tomorrow at No. 15 Kansas.
