Shocker Brew: 9/8: The Shockers' Killer Weekend

The Wichita State volleyball team got a combined 27 kills from middles Maddie Wilson and Elinor Engel to surge past Northern Colorado in the final match of the BYU Nike Invitational.

Good morning, Shocker Nation. The Wichita State volleyball team got a combined 27 kills from middles Maddie Wilson and Elinor Engel to surge past Northern Colorado 25-19, 23-25, 25-14, 22-25, 15-7 in the final match of the BYU Nike Invitational.

The Shockers (3-2) finish the competition with a 2-1 record, sandwiching wins over Incarnate Word and Northern Colorado around a loss to #18 BYU.

🌾 ONE BIG THING

Running Into History. Wichita State sophomore Elkana Kipruto won the 6K race to help the Shocker men claim their fourth-straight JK Gold Classic team title on a muddy Saturday morning at Clapp Cross Country Course.
 
The Mosoriot, Kenya native ran 18:41.49 in his Shocker debut to claim Wichita State's first individual JK Gold Classic men's win since Bryce Merriman won the 2022 title.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 No Payne, No Gain. The Wichita State women’s golf team opens its second tournament of the season today in the Payne Stewart Memorial.
 
The Shockers opened the season in August at the Jayhawk Invitational, where they finished in fourth place. Kayla Van de Ven and Mackenzie Wilson tied for tenth to lead the Shockers, while Amelie Paul tied for seventh, competing as an individual, marking her first collegiate top-ten finish.
 
Ten teams will join the Shockers at Twin Oaks. Memphis is among the teams and the field, marking the first American Conference opponent the Shockers will face this season.

🔼 Beyond the Court. The team that builds together…

🔼 A Safe Bet. Adrian Diaz Lopez considered running at Oklahoma State so strongly that he had an email waiting for his signature for a scholarship. Alabama was also an option.
 
The belief that Wichita State and distance coach Kirk Hunter presented a better option won out.

After WSU, his focus is on international track and field competition, with the goal of competing for Spain in the Olympics. He transferred to Wichita State in 2022 from Cowley College and values the time and improvement he has experienced as a Shocker.
 
This fall, Diaz Lopez looks forward to ending his college career on what he thinks is the strongest team of his time at WSU.

Wichita State and Nebraska were scheduled to play in Lincoln last fall, but the game was canceled due to forecasted inclement weather.

Nebraska finished last season 33-29 and claimed the Big Ten Tournament title on the Huskers’ way to the Chapel Hill Regional, where they went 1-2.
