Shocker Brew 11/20: Speaking With One Voice

Today, we celebrate Mike Kennedy on his 1,400th appearance behind the mic for Wichita State.

What all are we mixing into today’s Brew?

🔼 Split Decision. Wichita State volleyball finished their weekend splitting matches at Rice—completing a reverse sweep and rallying from down two sets to win 3-2 on Friday, but then falling in four sets on Sunday.

In the opening match, the Shockers flipped the script after a slow start, surging behind a spectacular defensive effort and late offense from Barbara Koehler and Emerson Wilford. Wichita State finished with 117 digs, their most in a match since the 2007 season (137 vs. Illinois State, Nov. 23). After Rice hit .348 in the opening set, the Owls hit .156, .191, .135 and .130 the rest of the way to finish at .197 to Wichita State's .210.

In the follow up match, Wichita State claimed the opening set but could not slow down Rice's Emilia Weske as the Owls rallied for a 23-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-22 win at Tudor Fieldhouse.

📆 Wichita State concludes the regular season on Wednesday night against UAB. First serve from Charles Koch Arena is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

🔼 If You Can See It, You Can Be It. Bailey Urban and Lauren Lucas watched the Athletes Unlimited Pro Softball last summer to see their friend play shortstop and to witness the growth of their favorite sport on ESPN networks.

"I'd watch these people play for a long time," said Urban, a senior outfielder for Wichita State. "It's always playing the best vs. the best, every single week."

In June, Athletes Unlimited brings its unique format of professional softball to Wilkins Stadium in a demonstration of how the sport is growing and how Wichita State is part of that popularity. Former Shocker All-American shortstop Sydney McKinney—who played in Athletes Unlimited last summer—will be one of the 42 athletes competing over the 18-game schedule.

"It's honestly a dream," McKinney said. "It feels like worlds are colliding. I feel like I'm growing into AU, and I still have so much family here in Wichita, so it's really cool that we're combining."

🔼 Speaking With One Voice. We’d be remiss if we didn’t honor Mike Kennedy—the Voice of the Wichita State Shockers—on his 1,400th career game this weekend!

Pohto notched his second double-double of the season with a season-high 23 points and 12 rebounds.
